Most never get the chance to try Linux because their computers come
pre-loaded with Windows. Things might be different if the consumer was
offered a choice of a Windows machine, a Linux machine or a machine
with no operating system on it.
The problem is that Microsoft has such a huge installed base, Linux
has a difficult time overcoming the Microsoft inertia effect. If
people aren't using Linux it's not because of the quality of Linux
because Linux is at least as good as Windows in many ways, better in
most and not as good in some others.
