So you're a mac'er huh?
Figures!

Oh and the Media Center in Windows 7 is excellent!

Oh, I have been using Win 7 and think highly of it. Much better than XP or
any other version of Windows I have used. But I also know it does not do
all I want a computer to do.

I, nor anyone one I know, need to use any of those programs/suites. If I
did need to I would prolly have to run Windows which would not be a
horror. It would take some getting used to though. And there are things
Linux can do that the others can not. One thing being running for weeks on
end on my laptop without one crash or reboot required. Now that's more
worth to me than being able to run an iWhatever suite. But then again,
that's me. For many people Windows is their only option simply because
they do not know it's not.

Well, those are Mac programs... but same idea.

And this is not to say that there are not programs on Windows which are
better than they are on OS X... heck, MS Office is available on OS X but it
is better, in my view, on Windows.

I am hard pressed to think of programs that are better on Linux - because of
the open source nature of so many programs, they are generally ported to
other OSs and are usually just as good there. Where there are exceptions,
there are usually other alternatives on those OSs.

Linux does have the benefit of being being free... and that is a very big
benefit to many.

I generally would say the same thing about OS X...

I know Windows, OS X and Linux... though Linux not as well as the other two.

May I chime in here? Like being immune to malware and viruses and not
require a plethora of software and security measures to stay productive
for more than a month. I think Win 7 is better in that regard also, but
companies like Symantec and such are still making a buck on Win 7 users I
imagine, right?

Well, I listed some above. Let's just stick with this - nothing on Win 7 to
compete with Tofu (which I use often), DreamCatcher (which is important to
my workflow in multiple capacities), iWork, iLife, etc. There is also no
media browser, etc.

Not to say Windows 7 is not good... and does not have its own benefits. I
have MS Office on both Mac and Windows, but for any documents where I need a
TOC, bibliography, multiple styles, etc. I think the Windows version is far
better.

How to write a Linux virus in 5 easy steps

If it hasn't happened...it will...if linux ever gets into the mass
desktop market.
That's a BIG IF!!!...LOL!

I see you're not at all familiar with Vista or Windows 7. Also WTF are
you surfing that you continually run into virus/malware?

Really? I haven't used Norton Security for years. Also Symantec now
makes a lot more software than just Norton Security.
The only security software I now use is Microsoft Security
Essentials...its free and made by MS for Windows.

That's really not believable cause if you take your laptop anywhere in a
any type of carrying case when its in any kind of "suspend" mode it will
still be using energy and creating heat. I know cause I've accidentally
done that and when I took it out of its case it was very hot. Heat and
dirt are the enemies of all electronics.

Nor is re-booting because of an update or app install with Vista/Win 7.
But is re-booting that big of a deal?
Oh, I don't ever re-boot my Microsoft Windows Home Server and it runs 24/7.

Doesn't matter what I surf since I'm on Linux. I've heard that some people
got to unsafe porn sites on Windows. Maybe that's how they get infected
(in more ways than one even)?

If you do not know what is offered on alternative platforms, how do you
claim to know:

-----
Windows 7 will do everything including all that the others can't do.
-----

Perhaps you just meant you had not found things that Windows 7 did not allow
you to do as well as the alternatives. In any case, here is a link to the
Tofu page:

<http://amarsagoo.info/tofu/>

Before I found Tofu I did not like reading even relatively large selections
of text on screen. Now I do not mind it so much. And, better yet, I can
select text from almost any program and right click on it and bring it into
Tofu - that is from the OS X Services capability (something else Windows
does not have - and this is a built in feature of OS X!)

>> DreamCatcher (which is important to
>> my workflow in multiple capacities), iWork, iLife, etc.

Right... in response to your claim that Windows 7 will do what the 'others"
do and more. It does not.

>> There is also no media browser, etc.
>>

> No media browser?
> What is Windows Media Player?
> What is Windows Media Center?

I can see your confusion being that you are not familiar with the
alternatives. I meant the capability to access the play lists of Windows
Media player from other programs... as you can access music and video play
lists, image albums, etc., from other programs in OS X. Here is info on it:

<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsPO0a0lKc0>

What is shown in that video is, well, not that great - they show dragging a
folder to the media browser when you could have just opened the folder and
done the same thing! But watch carefully from about :15 to :20. Notice
that the media browser taps into the media from multiple sources - whether
from folders *or* as you organize in iPhoto or whatever. And this is
available not just in Apple software but lots of third party software - even
in the Open dialogs if not added by the developer. Nothing like it on any
other OS as far as I know.

Now combine that with a biggie I forgot to mention - Automator:
<http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2urhf_apple-automator-media-browser_tech>

What is like Automator on Windows? It is much like Unix piping but with a
GUI.

Sounds like a recent Apple commercial...

MS-DOS won out against MacOS.

WinDOS has been preloaded on pretty much all PCs since before the
first line of the Linux kernel was written and since before the first
line of KDE was written.

Apple with a well established brand and company and product and a
very effective advertising campaign for over 3 years even has a problem
putting much a dent in the hegemony even with machines that are now no
more expensive than the common fodder at Costco or Best Buy.

[deletia]

"Salesmanship" usually wins out.

If you are lucky, your preferred product won't have to deal with
being tied (or not) to nearly every other product in the market.

Soup and cars are nice this way.

No one "needs" Windows.

It's just what happens to be sold with most machines.

Perhaps there might even be a forced perception of needing to be "DOS compatable".

Probably the Mac since it won't root itself, it comes with most of what mundane
users want/need already preloaded, has good enough 3rd party software support
and typically very good in terms of n00b interfaces.

The big lie has always been that Windows is somehow a proper Mac clone.

What? Be maintenance free?

Not bloodly likely.

[deletia]

A consumer computer needs to be something that the consumer can
treat like a toaster (at least from the sysadmin point of view) once
everything is set up.

Anal updates? Anti-virus? Paranoid web browsing?

None of that should be necessary.

I'm glad it works for you but I don't have that problem. I can adjust
test size with my mouse scroll wheel on the fly and I use two 28' LCD
wide screen monitors at 1900 x 1200 res.

And I see your confusion being that you're not familiar with Windows.
Your vid shows a brochure being created and a folder being dragged and
dropped into a media folder. You can do all of that just a easily in
Windows & by dragging and dropping the folders into the "Libraries" folder.
I don't see anything so special about that.

Now I know you've never used Windows Media Center in Windows 7.
