ALV (a Learners’ View) of Teaching as OMM (Observe, Manage – Instruct – and Measure)

NOTES feature discussions about learning as social processes and contexts in which learning occurs, such as through teaching. Notes include more speculation than descriptions of learning reported by experimental behavioral and social scientists. For example, notes may refer to scholarly studies of literature, government reports, opinion and best practices studies, or practices conducted through secondary analysis of data reported from other than results of experimental empirical research designs. As important as such descriptions about learning may appear, they do not describe with the same degree of accuracy, precision, and measured confidence as do results from the experimental studies of choices people make while learning.

Descriptions of A Learners’ View (ALV) as a Process and a Product

Learning according to learners consists of a social interaction (a process) that translate random human behavior into social action patterns that learners use to solve a problem as do the most accomplished people in society solve them.

A Learners’ View (ALV) of learning refers to both a social process (social interaction) and a social product (an observable, measurable pattern of social interaction)

As a process, the term represents descriptions of learning as learners view that learning during instruction of lessons that learners learn. This description consists of the minimum number and kinds of generic processes and their relationships that  observers can see, hear, etc. learners use. Learners view these processes as choices they make while learning how to solve the problems in ways teachers instruct. Experimental behavioral and social scientists have described these generics in reports of their studies as the operations they observe, manage, and measure while testing hypotheses and theories of learning and of teaching.

As a product, the term refers to the components of an algorithm (a self-contained sequence of steps – operations) of the probable choices learners will make while learning. Teachers use these components to design and instruct lessons irrespective of their brand.
