Darn, you beat me to it. I was going to try to tiptoe in at the last moment
and recommend it. It's one of my "must-haves."

The last update on the Web site is 2007, and no mention is made of
Windows 7. Does this work with Windows 7 x64?

http://www.freecommander.com/fc_downl_en.htm

I used it in Vista and I am now using it in Windows 7 Home Premium
without any problems.

I have no experince of 64 bit - you could ask the question in their

I have found a workaround for my Word. Dunno if it is any help for your
problem. As you know I can't open two instances of Word at the same time.
I found that if I open one, give it a name and save to the desktop then do
the same with another, I can work between two.

Thanks for the link. The date of this version is quite recent --
Halloween of last year.

By following your second link, I found this post:

http://www.forum.freecommander.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2372&sid=ca23d3c48b2bcdf99ea6e32cf2d16c47

Hi. Just wanted to ask if there is any way to help FC run well on
W7 x64. I guess it is not planned to create a x64 version but
maybe with some tricks.

Apart from not showing the 7zip context menu, in general it is
very buggy. It takes long to open first of all. The when I double
click to open a folder it won't respond. I need to double click
again. Sometimes 3 times. When I drag and drop it takes very long.
Very. And many times it doesn't really do anything. So I need to
cut, open the destination folder and paste. And still many times
it won't work. When I delete files it takes ages and/or gets
stuck. And so on. Many things work bad.

I have been trying all the other alternatives to FC but no one is
as good as FC for my taste, plus it is for free.

Any suggestions to improve these problems if there are any? I am
now using the default windows explorer most of the time as it runs
perfect and fast, but I want the two panels and opening in the two
panels I want by default (D: and D:/Downloads).

Thanks in advance.

[end quote]

So it appears that FreeCommander won't work on Windows 7 x64,
which was my original question. I post this material for the
benefit of others wondering the same thing.

I'm running Win7 64. I've just downloaded and installed Free Commander
and it looks OK. It installs and runs with no errors.
I've only tried a few of the many features but I haven't been able
to get it to crash yet. You have to download the help file separately
and move it into the Commander folder. Also unblock the help file or it
won't work, (right-click FreeCommander.chm, Properties > Unblock).

There must have been something wrong with the poster's Win7 installation
you quoted because everything opens in a snap on my box. Drag and drop
no problem. Perhaps he had Norton or something like that installed.

Thanks for the input. I was going to pass over FreeCommander based
on the information in the post I quoted, but if you are running it
with no problems, maybe I will give it a try, and see for myself.
It's still hard to find reliable information on the x64 version of
Windows 7, which almost everyone will be running in a year or two.

Win 7 marks everything that has been downloaded from the internet as unsafe.
That's what triggers the warning box when you try to run something you've downloaded.
If you clear the box that says' Always ask before opening this file' then that 'unblocks' it.

Question for you. I've been trying different file managers. I
tried out Q-Dir and UltraExplorer, but that's not the question. I
was trying to get zip folders to display their contents in
UltraExplorer (it won't do it, apparently) and noticed that *some*
of my ZIP folders will display their contents in the right panel
of Windows Explorer when I click to highlight them on the left
side of the program, but other ZIP folders won't show their
contents. It's been driving me nuts for the past hour, trying to
figure out what is different between the ZIP archieves that
display their contents, and the ZIP archives that don't show them.
Any ideas?

Maybe the zip files that won't open need to be unblocked, if they came from
another computer or the net.

I checked out their properties, and I did the unblocking thing on
them. No difference.

All of mine seem to open on the right side.
I've just tried a few zips to see if it was because
of a different account owner but there's no difference.
