No, but thanks, anyway.
I spent all of yesterday trying different free file manager
replacements, just to see if I could find one that did what I
wanted. No luck. My findings, for anybody who is looking into
alternative file managers, is that all of them have limitations.
FreeCommander, which is pretty good, won't show a full directory
tree structure -- it only displays one drive at a time, and it
doesn't show the libraries. Some people may find the lack of the
libraries in the file manager a good thing, though.
Also, no
launch bar.
Cubic Explorer, which is fairly nice once you get it configured,
doesn't have a launch bar, either, and won't show a split screen.
Neither of these two gave much trouble, so anyone who wants an
alternative to the Windows 7 File Explorer might want to try them.
These are the two I left on my computer to play with.
I also tried PowerDesk 5, my all-time favorite free file manager.
It loads fine but once loaded, doesn't want to show itself when it
is re-started, even when started in compatibility mode. Version
six I haven't tried on this computer, but it's got an annoying nag
screen, and my impression when I played with it a couple of years
ago is that it is identical to version five apart from a bit of
frosting.
I also tried Explorer 2 Lite, UltraExplorer (which is a lot like
Cubic Explorer), MuCommander, ExplorerXP, AccelMan (which like
PowerDesk, installed fine but didn't want to open after
installed), and three or four others such as that quad screen
manager the name of which escapes me. None of them has the
functionality of PowerDesk, which is what I'm looking for -- a
program launch bar, the ability to ZIP and UnZIP files right in
the file manager, the ability to peek into ZIP and RAR archives,
and to drag and drop files out of ZIP and RAR archives, a two-pane
function, a graphical preview function, a command line,
customizable and moveable button bars.
