I've been running it on x64 since I first installed W7. No problems here,
but that's not to say others won't have problems.

You don't have to hold the shift or control key down, as long as you
press it *before* the next mouse click.

Also - you can select a block and then with control-click select an
isolated file, and you can also use control-click to unselect a single
file, whether it's in a block or separate. That is, control-click acts
as a toggle.

And after you have a block selected and you've used Ctrl-Click to
select or deselect a few singles, you can select a second block by
Ctrl-Clicking the first (or last) item in the second block, then
pressing Ctrl-Shift-Click to select the last (or first) item in the
second block.

In that way, you can move up and down in a long list of files and
select multiple blocks, multiple singles, and you can also deselect
one or more singles, all without disturbing the rest of your
selections.

I tried every combination of things I could think of to get them
to open -- no luck. They seem identical to the ones that open, as
far as the properties go.

If you like, can you upload one of the zips somewhere so I can have a look at it?

No, but thanks, anyway.

I spent all of yesterday trying different free file manager
replacements, just to see if I could find one that did what I
wanted. No luck. My findings, for anybody who is looking into
alternative file managers, is that all of them have limitations.

FreeCommander, which is pretty good, won't show a full directory
tree structure -- it only displays one drive at a time, and it
doesn't show the libraries. Some people may find the lack of the
libraries in the file manager a good thing, though. :) Also, no
launch bar.

Cubic Explorer, which is fairly nice once you get it configured,
doesn't have a launch bar, either, and won't show a split screen.

Neither of these two gave much trouble, so anyone who wants an
alternative to the Windows 7 File Explorer might want to try them.
These are the two I left on my computer to play with.

I also tried PowerDesk 5, my all-time favorite free file manager.
It loads fine but once loaded, doesn't want to show itself when it
is re-started, even when started in compatibility mode. Version
six I haven't tried on this computer, but it's got an annoying nag
screen, and my impression when I played with it a couple of years
ago is that it is identical to version five apart from a bit of
frosting.

I also tried Explorer 2 Lite, UltraExplorer (which is a lot like
Cubic Explorer), MuCommander, ExplorerXP, AccelMan (which like
PowerDesk, installed fine but didn't want to open after
installed), and three or four others such as that quad screen
manager the name of which escapes me. None of them has the
functionality of PowerDesk, which is what I'm looking for -- a
program launch bar, the ability to ZIP and UnZIP files right in
the file manager, the ability to peek into ZIP and RAR archives,
and to drag and drop files out of ZIP and RAR archives, a two-pane
function, a graphical preview function, a command line,
customizable and moveable button bars.

I'll stay at the top :)

Wow, you deserve a gold star for road-testing all the different file
managers!
I wouldn't have a problem with Windows Explorer, if it worked properly.
Maybe after the first Service Pack (I live in hope).

Well, SP1 is in early testing now but I don't recall seeing any file
explorer issues listed. I'll check again on the next release notes update.

Wouldn't think that problems with releasing handles on files would be talked
about as an explorer issue. Might just be an annoyance that gets fixed and
never mentioned.

I noticed today that I misspoke, or at least was unclear, in my remark
above. I'll copy and correct it now :)

You don't have to hold the shift or control key down CONTINUOUSLY, as
long as you press AND HOLD it *before* the next mouse click.

Thanks for the expansion of my expansion :)

I tried out a couple more tonight -- A43 and AC Browser Plus, both
free. They both work fairly well. I guess I'm fussy, but neither
is exactly what I'm looking for.

You forgot Directory Opus!

IMHO one of the best.

You have to pay for that one. I wouldn't pay for such a program,
so not much point in me testing it out on the free trial. I'm
sure, from what I've read, that it's good.

Amen! I started using DOpus back when I still had an Amiga.

It is, and it's worth every penny you spend for it. Greg Perry provides
awesome support for the software, and it's very customizable for
whatever need you have.

Al, try out Total Commander. I have used it for years (it used to be
called Windows Commander), and I absolutely refuse to be without it.

If I am not mistaken it can be run as shareware with only a little nag
screen at startup where you have to click on a number. Don't know if
it will run indefinitely in this mode, but do yourself a favour and
check it out.

I found my file manager! After trying out about a dozen of them, I
found Explorer++ version 1.0.0.0, which is written for Windows 7
x64. It's a bit buggy at the moment, but it is exactly what I was
looking for. Maybe it's because I'm an old PowerDesk user -- in
the Explorer++ forums, I noticed that a couple of other former
PowerDesk users were raving about Explorer++. I hope the author
gets his bug fixes out soon, because I really, really like this
file manager.

I wonder why the author chose that file icon, it gets lost on my desktop amongst
all the other folders. I've changed mine to something more suitable!

I thought the same thing. It's like a slight variation on the
Windows Explorer icon. Needs more pizazz.

I can't see any way to get two directories displayed in side by sdie
in dual panes as Free Commander does. Is this possible? If not, it is
not for me :-(
