What don't you understand about open source?
It's what linux is all about...but in an attempt to "catch MS" or
whatever these new distros are up too...they've loaded up on closed
source drivers.
Kind of cheating a little, I'd say.
Linux video drivers suck it ... and without closed source drivers, no
one would install it on a desktop PC.

Then you didn't "form" your own opinion.
You based it off the opinions of others.
The only way to form your own opinion of a product is to use it.

Hi Gene,
How are you referencing your unmounted volumes? Obviously not by drive
letter, so I'm curious. Thanks.

That about says it all. Maybe when you get sick and find out the
insurance companies left you with thousands of dollars of co payment
that you don't have will you understand what real socialism is. We have
seen what your buddies Bush and Cheney did with unchecked capitalism.
Maybe you should go into the Gulf of Mexico for a swim in their honor.

"Mounting" is just a name for assigning a read address to a device so
if your backup application ca see a drive it could mount it for the
duration of the backup and then dismount it, or if the drive is
accessed through an address that is part of the application's code,
when the application quits the drive would automatically be un
mounted.

That is very much what my backup scripts do. They are launched and
simply check the existence of a named backup partition, if it is
available they mount it, do the backup and then de mount the partition
and then die, task accomplished.

It is probably easier to do in a Unix/Linux script because of the
availability of software tools but it would be almost as easy to do in
"C" or any other language that gives you access to the basic hardware.
No reason that any operating system couldn't do it; and apparently
they have :)

I know that open source is like Wikipedia. Anybody can contribute
and/or make changes, add enhancements, etc.

Maybe I'm wrong, but the major problems I see with open source is that
there are simply too many hands in the pot and not enough hard
standards. I simply can't recommend an open source operating system to
my customers only to find later that it won't run that new CAD program
or print to his new color laser because of software incompatibilities.
Alternately, I CAN recommend anything from Microsoft. Then if there is
incompatibility, I just blame it on Billy Gates...

I still hate Microsoft though.

Maybe you're right, Mr. Death. However, let me further explain the
process I use to "form" an opinion: I typically start by gathering
bits and pieces of reviews, opinions and recommendations from numerous
sources (not blogs) I have come to trust in my 33 years in the
computer field. This initial research helps me choose a product and
serves as the basis for my 'pre-opinion' of that product. I then
purchase the item and use/experiment/test it personally to verify that
my own assessment of the product is in line with everything I have
read about it. Only then will I give a customer my personal
recommendation, understanding that my own reputation is on the line.
If my procedure is not to your liking, I could always just blindly
purchase 40-50 different items then spend the next year or so using,
testing and evaluating them personally. Only problem, I don't think I
have the time or money to actually do that...

Poor Mr. Death... I'm very surprised! You should be more assertive
with your overbearing wife and try to stand up to her more often. If
my wife ever laid a hand on my porn, she would be a very sorry
individual.

Now tell the truth... Was it your nasty old wife who told you that all

excellent porn currently floating all around Cyberspace! Its true!!

Please Mr. Death. I asked you nicely for VIABLE alternatives, for I'm
just "too stupid to find alternatives"! And, you said yourself that
"even dumbass iDumbasses can find another OS". The truth is that I
could never write my own OS and I really hate all of Micro$haft's
offerings and I can't recommend open source... I really hate to whine
again but could you please show me that you aren't a stupid unskilled
dumbass and provide just TWO VIABLE alternatives?

1.

2.

I wouldn't mind partying with GW. I would probably go to a poker game

him to the cleaners. HEY! Maybe you could ask GW for a VIABLE
alternative?

Okay. Enough of this jibber-jabber. I'm too busy to spend any more
time on this - anyway, there are three rascally squirrels currently in
my yard scheming to find ways into my bird feeders and I have to
figure out how to keep them out. SO, please answer the following
honestly and to yourself.

Would you rather live in a world:

A. such as ours, that has multiple Automobile Manufacturers in
competition with each other, all vying for the $$$ in our pockets and
striving to supply consumers with products that are better, cheaper
and more efficient and luxorious than their competitors offerings.

B. that has only one Automobile Manufacturer with maybe two or three
'different' car models that cost consumers as much $$$ as the
manufacturer feels it deserves, even though their products never ever
work right off the assembly line, are required to be taken back to the
dealer on the second Tuesday of each month for fixes and upgrades in
order to avert disasters and products that last no more than a few
years - such as our current OS situation.

I don't know about you Mr. Death, but option A for me would seem to be
the fairer one for everyone.

Your post provides the best explanation for why Microsoft is the
dominant operating system for PC's in the world that I have read for
some time..

For the first few years PC's were built you had a choice in operating
systems, MS DOS or CP/M. At the time CP/M was the best system for PC's
available but what did the average buyer know? You could get a PC with
MS DOS, and you could also buy from the same vendor all kinds of
programs to use on it. CP/M was an operating system and the Digital
Research didn't market other user software and while there were plenty
of programs available for CP/M you sort of had to go looking for them.
DOS programs were right there on the shelf.

And then Microsoft built Windows - WOW! A graphics interface and the
snazziest thing since sliced bread to most users.

Of course a few years after Windows 95 you could buy a
multi-processing, multi-tasking operating system for PC's from IBM but
while it included an office suite there was very little user software
available for it and IBM did, frankly, a lousy job of marketing and a
major portion of the PC world didn't even know about it.

And all this time, from the early days of the PC there have been
various shades of Unix, and later Linux, available for the PC. but
there were also a couple of rivers to cross if you wanted to use it.
You had to install it which was a multitude of floppies and once
installed, if you wanted the graphics interface you needed to
configure "X" which was a task in itself. You needed to know all
kinds of things about your monitor, scan rate and so on, and there was
a very real chance that you would burn up your monitor if you
configured "X" incorrectly.

To the average user that was a task equal to climbing the Matterhorn.
so the continued to buy Microsoft.

And they continue to buy MS because it is the best thing that they
know about.

Cheers,

John D. Slocomb

Once again...I don't give a fuck.
You said you form your own opinion based on what you read.
That is simply not possible.
It may be the method you use, others go by word of mouth.
Gives rise to rampant speculation and judgements based on inaccurate
inf.ormation.

Man, are you fuckin dense.
There are plenty of alternatives.
If you need your fuckin hand held, I don't know what to tell you.

You are the one saying Windows is the only game in town.
Yet bitch about them.
Tough shit, I guess.

I hate neither.
NAZIs didn't do anything to me personally, so what do I care?

Don't care about Halliburton neither.

I assume you fear all large corporations?

I don't give a shit either way.
I'd build my own fuckin car...or I'd live with it.

You'll spend your life whining about it.
Good for you.
Most Americans have turned into whiney little babies, much like
yourself, incapable of doing it, so you expect others to do it
for you, under your terms.
Haha ... I call 'em losers.

Wrong...muttonchop.
I have it.
It would take 100's of thousands to burdon me.
What part of I am financially capable of taking care of myself and
therefore I am against handouts to dumbass morons do you not get?
If I was poor, like you *must be*, perhaps I would share that opinion.
If an individual cannot take care of themselves, what the fuck do I
care?
Stop making babies, then.
Get a job, get two if you have to.
It shouldn't be my problem, nor the problem of my child and his
potential children to pay for the lazy dumbasses of today.

WE live in a time, and its fuckin bizarre that it has been allowed to
get this way, where the food these dumbasses spunge today will be payed
for by their grand, great-grand children.

Nice.
Perfectly acceptable...to scumbags.

Umm...they aren't my buddies, dumbass.
I don't Hate them...I'm not a fuckin moron in that way.

You could elect a monkey president...nothing would change, you twit.
Government has gotten too large, gotten into hand holding, coddling,
babysitting, feeding, clothing, housing, uneducating little sissies that
whine about everything...yet are at the mercy of everyone because they
are incapable of taking care of themselves.

You want Oil to go away?
Stop buying it, its by-products, using any technolgy that uses it.
Then convince 5 billion other people to do the same.
As long as there is a market for it, they will get it from where ever it
exist.
Don't like it?
Too bad.
Get on the bus, ask the driver to take you where someone cares.

I am a whiner, but I don't spend a whole lot of time whining. Only ten
or fifteen minutes per day. I figure it's worth it as long as it
annoys some other gullible human.

I'm talking about a lot more. I knew a guy who had MILLIONS and died
broke because his body went one part at a time over ten years. He died
broke making the co payments for all the operations he had.

Today someone else is broke. Tomorrow you are. Your disdain for those
less fortunate than you will be the overriding cause for your eventual
poverty.

Yeah, but the times they are a changing and more and more people are
using Linux than ever before. When someone thinks of buying a game
console, phone or tablet, they don't think Microsoft. Microsoft was
behind the game with the Internet and now it's behind the game in mobile
devices and Cloud Computing.

This latest Ubuntu is a game changer. Install it now with the latest
updates and you'll be amazed.

You know a lot of people that always seem to suffer the "worst case
scenario".
Strange that, but no matter, even if I believe you, he died
broke...nothing wrong with that, you can't take it with you.

I'm hoping to die with a single nickel left.

Hahaha.
Not bloody likely.

I have NO disdain for them.
I help the poor all the time...you outta see how much I pay in taxes.

My dislike is of the stupid ones whom get drunk and make babies that I
and other responsible citizens have the priviledge of raising.
I get to feed the morons that grow up to rob people.

I have nothing against poor people, and am more than willing to help any
with the smallest iota of ambition to one day care for themselves.

Do you know, in the US, only 44% of people pay taxes?

As you can see from our deficits, gets pretty hard for 4 people to take
care of 10 people and maintain a quality of life.

With the socialist...it will be 2 people taking care of 10, and 6 of
those will work for the government.

Unsustainable.

No, these peoples food will be paid for by the unborn.
If that concept is not intolerable to you, then you are a "its all about
me" socialist.
And you are, no suprise to me.

Guarentee you are some kind of ward of the state.
Been milking people for money since you slinked away from the US.

Well, it won't happen, because no monkey would want that job.

Looking at the deficits, its the truth, and none of these government
systems seem to be working.
For 30 years, education would improve with "more money".
Trillions of dollars were tossed to them, and seems the money got
squandered, cause the kids are still dumb as a brick.
Those morons can't even understand a credit card agreement after 16
years of school.
Then the whining starts.
Help me, government, help me...I was been tricked.
