That's because T'Burp has no scoring....

OK. I'll bite. I'm not married to Tbird. It was just a handy replacement
for OE. Presumably XNews has scoring. How does scoring work?

I downloaded XNews and looked over the docs, but I am still lost when it
comes to blocking followups to known trolls (feeding the troll):

% kill if from known troll
Score: -9999
From: Joe Troll

% kill followup to known troll
Score: -9999
????

Not really. To repeat what's been said many times, it's not like the
newsgroups are going anywhere. Microsoft exiting will pretty much go
unnoticed. Nothing has been killed off.

I've said that a million times.........if you kf posters, you
will end up with a LOT of threads just starting out RE:.

It's easier just to ignore these threads.....it's not hard to
spot them....unless you're (not you) a complete retard.

It's been about a year and a half since I tried Gravity. At that time, new
posts didn't populate automatically, or I never found the setting. Perhaps
I'll revisit it. Other than that, it looked quite nice.

Except in most of the "MS" newsgroups that I used to read using the MS
News server, and now access via Eternal September, the traffic has gone
to ZERO....
So yes, they HAVE been killed off....

Not true.

Right, not literally. But Microsoft's stopping carrying them has
dramatically reduced the traffic in them. They may not disappear
immediately, but from a practical standpoint they will be probably be
very close to gone in a short time.

There are six newsgroups that I used to subscribe to on the MS news
server, and now subscribe using Eternal September where the traffic has
gone down to ZERO. And they were reasonably busy groups on the MS
server... :-(

First, you probably don't want to block followups, that allows a known
troll to "poison" a thread, suppose someone asks a question about Win7
and receives several answers. So far, so good. Next, a Linux Troll
posts his/her/it's usual crap and you set the score to -9999 for Joe
Troll but followups need to be set to less than -9999 (I use -5000) so
now the follow ups are downloaded (I download headers only) and marked
so you can read them or not but you recognize them a followups to a
troll.

Example, here's my scoring for Google Groupers:
=================================================
Score: -9999
Message-ID: googlegroups\.com

Score: -5000
References: googlegroups
=================================================

Simple, easy and effective. It allows me to see replies to Google
Group Spammers and read (if I want) in the rare case a Google Grouper
has posted something other than spam.

Xnews also has the convenient "Get Parent" and "Reconstruct Thread"
features so I can go back and get the original GG post if needed.

You can ask any questions about Xnews and scoring in
news.software.readers, many very sharp people are there. Also, the
late (and much missed) Blinky the Shark left us with his own Xnews
site:

http://twovoyagers.com/blinkynet.net/comp/ndx_windows.html

Scroll down to the Xnews section and note the links to many other Xnews
information sites.

So if I follow you, it's something like this:

Did/can/will Microsoft kill some newsgroups? Strictly speaking, the
answers are no, no, and no.

However, it appears that enough people mistakenly assumed or believed
that Microsoft leaving would, indeed, mean the groups were killed, so
they stopped posting there, and in effect, achieved the very thing
that Microsoft was unable to do directly, (or was uninterested in
doing).

If accurate, it's an interesting study in human behavior and group
think (no pun intended).

Another thing to consider is the amount of people that used the Web
interface to post such as this:

http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...a1e-b269-4291-b6b4-dc2d504ce9ef&lang=en&cr=US

Now for those people, the new forums are probably a blessing. Just from my
recollection, I would guess that for this newsgroup, it was only about
10~15% of the people. But for a newsgroup like Internet Explorer General,
it was about 50%.

Mind you that I am not advocating the new forums at all. I too wish the
newsgroups lived on forever.

Thank you. That may be true, but I would still like to know how to mark
followups to Joe Troll. Nothing in References or Message-ID will point
specifically to a particular poster.

An example of what I would like to block is the thread immediately
preceding this one ("Re: alias says..."). I have both Alias and Frank in
my block list, but I'm still left with their responders.

Nothing against Thunderbird, but I doubt anyone that does not consider
Windows Mail a proper newsreader would consider T-Bird a proper

Amen to that. T'Burp is very lacking in filtering ability. Version
3.x is better but still inadequate for use in troll infested
newsgroups.
