Thanks, John. I downloaded and installed the program, rebooted, and ran
search. I was encouraged, and ran a long search. After about a minute,
the same error message occurred. I was deflated, needless to say...

Go to windows update site and read what is printed along side the two
buttons.

Have no idea what's causing the error, but I can fix your problem.

Abandon MS Search and use Agent Ransack. It's free, fast, and flexible.

Checked my programs and Windows Search 4.0 is not installed (Add-Remove
Programs list)

While I would like to figure out what the problem is with Search, I will
check out Agent Ransack. Thanks
