IE8: Autocomplete List

M

Hi,

It looks like Autocomplete list isn't working, eventhough I have it ON in
the Options>Contents>Settings. I type my username when logging in to
a website. Later when I go back to the website login page, my
username isn't listed on the Autocomplete list. What's happening?

Thanks,

Using XP Pro SP3

Do you have IE8 configured to do cleanup when it exits, like purging any
cookies? Might it be configured to also cleanup any auto-complete info?

Internet Options -> General tab: Browsing History, Delete

Are those items enabled to get deleted when you exit IE8?

Not just limited to one website, just random sites. Mainly banking,
business, web ordering types of sites.

Do I have IE8 setup to do cleanup when it exits? Nope... Unchecked.

It looks like the majority of sites that are not showing the username on the
autocomplete list are login sites that have https, instead of the usual
http. Maybe https sites are not included in the autocomplete feature???

Re: Autocomplete List

Assuming WinXP SP3 & IE7 or IE8:

1. IE Tools | Internet Options | Privacy | Sites: type in

nameof.domain [e.g., live.com; microsoft.com]

and Allow cookies & test.

2. If no joy, eset IE Advanced settings
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737), reboot & test.

3. If still no joy, perhaps see:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ieinternals...et-explorer-password-autocomplete-prompt.aspx

Re: Autocomplete List

Thanks for taking the time on this. Really interesting as to why IE7 and
IE8 won't remember user names on certain sites, compared to IE6 which did.
Anyway...

I tried your suggestion #1 and no joy.

Didn't try suggestion #2 because everything else works fine in IE8 except
this topic. I really don't want to do a reset and have to set everything
back again. But curiosity may get me on this one later on, who knows?

As for suggestion #3, this is a little complicated so I didn't try it.
Sorry...

I guess I will have to live with this for now...

Again thanks,

Mark

Re: Autocomplete List

Let's take another tack:

We're dealing with WinXP SP3, right?

Have you ever had occasion to do a Repair Install of Windows?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Whether http or https, a site can specify the AUTOCOMPLETE=OFF attribute
in a field. This requests that the the web browser not cache the value
entered for a field. It's their choice. They don't want you caching
your login credentials on your host as a security measure. One, your
host may not be secure (i.e., you allow physical access to it by
others). Two, relying on a cached login means you WILL forget what they
are and they really don't want to be bothered with a tech call to reset
your password.

Look at the HTML code for the web page to see if the AUTOCOMPLETE
attribute is specified in a field definition.

That makes sense. I will peek into the HTML code and see what I find.

Re: Autocomplete List

Hi, see my responses below...

Q: We're dealing with WinXP SP3, right?
A: Correct

Q: Have you ever had occasion to do a Repair Install of Windows?
A: Not that I can remember, been using this computer for 3+ years, but do
plan getting a new computer later in the year with Windows 7.

Q: What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is the
subscription current?
A: Using Avast Internet Security 5, and the subscription is current.

Q: What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
A: Avast Internet Security 5, which is a suite of security anti virus,
firewall etc... protection. Did use Defender sometime ago, but not now.

Q: What third-party firewall?
A: No others, just what was mentioned above.

Q: Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?
A: Paid protection using Norton, but stopped using that for awhile. Did
have MS Live One Care, but it was discontinued, so I decided to go
with Avast as a replacement.

NOTE: I started noticing this issue after I installed IE8. Don't know if
IE7 had this issue since I didn't use it that long before I upgraded to IE8.

Thanks,
Mark

I looked for Autocomplete and none was found. Is this the only HTML code,
or are there other similar codes to look for?

1. Had your Norton subscription already expired by the time you installed
OneCare?

2. Did you download/run the Norton Removal Tool before you installed
OneCare?

3. Had your OneCare subscription already expired by the time you installed
Avast5?

4. Did you download/run the OneCare cleanup utility before you installed
Avast5?

1. Had your Norton subscription already expired by the time you installed

[A] NO; Using IE6 at this time, no autocomplete issues.

2. Did you download/run the Norton Removal Tool before you installed
OneCare?
[A] NO; Because I'm still using Norton Utilities, just not the anti-virus.
IE6 was running at this time, no autocomplete issues.

3. Had your OneCare subscription already expired by the time you installed
Avast5?
[A] YES; Running IE7, autocomplete seemed to work, I didn't notice anything
unusual, not certain though.

4. Did you download/run the OneCare cleanup utility before you installed
Avast5?
[A] NO; Still running IE7, the problem could of existed, but didn't notice
it until IE8 was installed after all this.

Back-up any personal data (none of which should be considered 100%
trustworthy at this point) then format the HDD & do a clean install of
Windows. Please note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT
fix this!

HOW TO do a clean install of WinXP: See

After the clean install, you will have the equivalent of a "new computer" so
take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting
the machine to the internet or a local network (i.e., other computers) and
before using a flash drive or SDCard that isn't brand-new or hasn't been

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA or Geek Squad) computer repair shop.

Re: Autocomplete List

Thanks for your suggestions PA Bear, but these are mostly drastic, and for a
simple issue of the autocomplete list not working correctly I would rather
live with that, then the unexpected of what could happen doing the
suggestions below. Since I will be getting a new computer within a few
months, I will leave things as is for now.

Again thanks for your time and suggestions on this issue.

Re: Autocomplete List

I can assure you that "autocomplete not working" is merely the tip of the
iceberg, Mark.
