Between Javascript or using server-side scripts, it is possible that you
won't [easily] see the attributes for an input control. You never
identified an example site; however, I'm no HTML/CSS/Javascript/server-
side script wizard so it could escape me, too.

Re: Autocomplete List

Autocomplete is still working on the majority of websites. What I am
questioning is, IE8 Autocomplete is not working on some Websites that did
work when using IE6. I used IE7 for a short time and didn't notice if
autocomplete had issues. The above is on my desktop (XP PRO SP3).

I also have a laptop, and it has XP Home SP2. The same thing is happening
on that one too after upgrading to IE8. Some websites that autocomplete
worked using IE6, is not on IE8.

Thanks for your concern and time on this matter.

But are they the same websites? If so, there is likely something in those
web pages that disables it in IE8 that did not work in IE6, for instance
some javascript that dynamically sets the autocomplete="off" attribute on
the form and/or fields.

Are these https URLs, or http?

The other thing to check is the zone the sites are in, and whether they are
being viewed in Compatibility Mode. If you have some example URLs it will
help as that would allow us to look for any commonality in the pages that
would cause Autocomplete to be disabled.

Re: Autocomplete List

Just saw the other replies in the other branch of this topic, so I see it's
mainly HTTPS sites. Have you got any toolbars installed, such as Google or
Yahoo? It's possible one of these is disabling IE from storing autocomplete
entries when viewing HTTPS sites as a security feature.

It's also possible that a left over setting from OneCare or Norton may be
causing this.

Are you using InPrivate mode when viewing these sites? If so, that will
prevent autocomplete from storing data too.

Re: Autocomplete List

No 3rd party toolbars installed, don't like them.

OneCare and Norton was running using IE6, the websites in question
worked. Norton was uninstalled long time ago, and IE8 was intalled around
the time OneCare was un-installed.

No, not using InPrivate Mode.

Yes, it seems the sites most affected are https sites, but not always the
case.
The search engine of MSN, Yahoo, etc are not acting the same when I have
suggested search OFF.

I uninstalled IE8, installed IE7 and most all autocomplete issues were back
again. Even the search engines like Bing were working better with better
control to turn off and on the suggested feature. Not in IE8.

Anyway, I am going to drop this for now, and wait for a new computer later
on. I will try Firefox browser as well and see how that works out.

Thanks for helping, but doing a search on "Autocomplete not working in IE8",
shows I am not the only one having this issue.

Re: Autocomplete List

1. You did not run the Norton Removal Tool before you installed OneCare.

2. Your OneCare subscription had already expired by the time you installed
Avast5 and originally installed IE8.

3. You did not download/run the OneCare cleanup utility before you installed
Avast5.

And you're thinking IE8 is the problem?

> I also have a laptop, and it has XP Home SP2. The same thing is

If that computer's anti-virus/anti-spyware history is anything like your
other computer, no wonder.

FYI: Support for WinXP (x86) SP2 ends on 13 July 2010. After that date,
computers running WinXP (x86) SP2 "will no longer receive software updates
from Windows Update" (i.e., Automatic Updates will not work and Windows
Update website will not be accessible) until SP3 has been installed.
Extended Support for WinXP SP3 will continue through 08 April 2014.

• What does it mean if my version of Windows is no longer supported?

Re: Autocomplete List

1. It's correct, I did not run Norton Removal Tool, that's because I am
still using Norton Utilities. And IE6 was being used then and no issues to
think other wise.

2. Actually it was IE7 that was installed before the OneCare expired, that
worked fine. IE8 was installed later, then noticed the autocomplete issues.

3. Had no reason to do so, all software applications were working normal,
until IE8 was installed.

And yes, as the common denominator here, I believe IE8 is the issue. I'm
not having issues with other software applications, just IE8.

I do plan to update the laptop to SP3 soon. This computer never had any
prior anti-virus applications other than OneCare. In this case, the Onecare
Clean-up Utility was used, just before Avast was installed. The laptop had
IE8 upgrade first, and noticed right away the autocomplete was different.

Anyways, I will be getting a new desktop computer soon, and will have lots
of fun learning the ins and outs of Windows 7.

Hang IE7, your OneCare subscription had expired before you installed Avast.

That's not what you told us earlier in this thread.

I beg to differ.

You need to run the OneCare utility for the same reason you should have run
the Norton Removal Tool: Both applications are notorious for not
uninstalling cleanly...the fact that you allowed your OneCare subscription
to expire notwithstanding.

Re: Autocomplete List

PA Bear:

I know you mean well.

Please understand, and getting little personal here. It never fails when
Murphy's Law will come knocking at the door. It did, and in this case, on
expired software subscription. Two things happened as to why Onecare was
left to expire.

1. MS decided to dis-continue it, so I was looking for a replacement that
included a firewall, with a good introductory price. This took time... If
MS didn't discontinue it, I would of renewed.
2. The above was also delayed further because I had surgery and needed time
to get back on my feet again. When I did, it was to late.

Sorry for the install date/time stamp on IE7 and IE8 mix up. Having
2 computers, working 12hr shifts, just had surgery, and "senor moments".
All have caused me to get cris-crossed on install time frames.

Laptop may have went like this:
Running IE7> Installed IE8> Onecare Expired> Uninstalled Onecare> ran
OneCare Cleanup Utility> Installed Avast.

Desktop may have went like this:
Running IE7> Onecare Expired> Uninstalled Onecare>
Installed Avast> Installed IE8.

So what's next?

Laptop:
The only thing that went wrong was having Onecare expire. But I
did use the OneCare cleanup utility before Avast was installed. (Why I
didn't use the clean up utility on the desktop as well? Well I didn't think
I needed to at the time I guess.)

Desktop:
I am still using Norton Utilities, so I plan not to use the Norton
Cleanup Utility?

Since Avast is installed, is it to late to use the OncCare Cleanup
Utility without un-installing Avast? Will this cause Avast to have
issues?

Please take into consideration when using IE7 on both computers,
autocomplete worked.
