At the airport watching Slingbox

I’m at the airport this morning, ready for a quick trip and since I got to the airport a little early I decided to watch a little TV. Not those terminal monitors locked onto CNN. I decided to watch CNBC via Slingbox.

Here’s my setup: I’m watching Slingbox, that is streaming the CNBC from a cable connection at home, on a Toshiba M400. My Internet connection? Although there is supposedly WiFi here at the Phoenix airport, I don’t often use it. Why? Because I find it much easier to use my own EVDO card. For the most part, its connection speed is adequate and more importantly it works consistently. This isn’t often the case for WiFi.

How’s the SlingPlayer working out since the Internet connection is only an EVDO? Not bad. The video quality isn’t all that great, however, after a few seconds of initial buffering, the sound is just fine. I’ve had a couple stutters in the audio, particularly when loading other web pages at the same time. Only one time so far this morning has the audio dropped out by itself. In case you’re wondering the receive rate reported by the Verizon VZAccess Manager oscillates between about 150kbps and 350kbps.
