Younger MathPractice

MPStarterSmall.gifSeveral people have mentioned to me that their 4 year old child has been practicing math skills with MathPractice. There are even some 3-1/2 year old MathPractice enthusiasts too. Simply amazing.

Since I originally wrote MathPractice I’ve been adjusting the user interface to make it easier for younger Tabletters. I’ve been increasing the size of the writing area, providing more control over the problems generated and more.

But what’s really been needed is a whole MathPractice experience geared towards the youngest Tablet mathematicians. We’re finally getting there with the new MathPractice Starter app, which we’ll be releasing with the forthcoming updates to the MathPractice series that I’ve mentioned in previous posts.

A screenshot of the new MathPractice Starter app is shown here. A couple of its new features:

* Objects are displayed along each number to make it easy to count out solutions to problems.
* A counting mode so children can start with answering the simple question: How many apples are shown?
* Simpler addition and subtraction problems that slowly increase in difficulty, but yet don’t grow into number problems too large.
* Even larger writing area for handwriting solutions.
* A default hint mode that displays what should be written in the cell.
