Net Applications released August statistics for desktop and mobile operating systems and browsers. Windows 8 gained 2.01 percentage points as Windows 7 also gained approximately a percentage point.
I downloaded the data from StatCounter Global Stats to compare percentages with Net Applications numbers (shown at end of article). The downloaded data shows 7.04%, with only a slight gain from previous months.
The jump in the Net Applications data may be due to a change in their own methodology. According to an important note in the website sidebar, “This month we start deducting hidden pages from our usage share statistics. Hidden pages are pages that are rendered but never viewed by the user, therefore, they should not be included in usage share data.”
In other words, a 2 percentage point gain in marketshare is probably an overstatement.
