I’m feeling a bit more connected to the wireless world right now. This is my first post using EV-DO–broadband wireless service via Verizon.
The throughput is reasonably good and I look forward to really putting EVDO to its paces over the coming days.
EVDO is a tad pricey at $79/month and up to $200+ for a PC wireless card, but I’ve wound up disconnected so many times now when I don’t want to be that I finally decided that I would have to do something about it. I’ve tried using bluetooth coupled with a bluetooth-enabled phone, but I’ve had trouble maintaining a good connection. Hopefully, the Verizon service will solve this problem.
Hey, no fair. I had bad hotel internet access for the last couple weeks and wished for broadband this way. When did you get this and why didn’t you let me steal it? Afterall, I’m your little sister 😀
Loren,
Welcome to the “Dark Side”. 😉 I’ve had EVDO through Verizon for about 3 weeks and I pumped 1GB of bandwidth throught it into my Tosh M205 Tablet in the first 10 days. I want to make sure I get my $80 worth! 😉
Lora, I picked it up Sunday. I decided with PDC and some other conferences coming up that there was no way I was going to be caught without Internet access if at all possible. I talked with the salesman for about an hour going through every gotcha that I could think of or that I read about. Signal strength is going to be the key. From my limited tests so far, download performance is OK, but I’m not going to drop my land broadband connection anytime soon. There is a noticable difference.
Kevin: Yeah, paying $80/month really encourages you to use it every chance you get. It’ll be interesting to see how good the connectivity is here in the Phoenix area. It would be interesting to create a map of connectivity quality–maybe bring together a Google map, GPS, EVDO signal strength/download throughput.
