Five, sometimes six companies in Asia manufacture the world’s computers. The number changes through corporate mergers. Despite news reports to the contrary, they build under contract for brand names sold in the United States.
Dell, the world’s largest maker of personal computers, confirmed that two weeks ago, one of its laptops caught fire in Illinois, and the owner dunked it in water to douse the flames.
Let us be clear. Some companies assemble some computers in the United States. No company makes computers in the United States. Not Tablet PCs, not notebooks, not desktops. Not Dell, not HP, not Toshiba, etc.
