Configuring email on the Cingular 2125 Smartphone

I finally got around to configuring email on my new Smartphone. It took me awhile to figure out how and what to click. Also, it took me awhile to realize that I wasn’t able to get my Hotmail email set up because it uses a different Passport than my messaging. Once I figured out that I needed to Switch Users to enter another Passport account my Hotmail showed up.

Dare Obasanjo suggests I can change my Messenger account association with Passport (with some caveats), however, I already have another Messenger “account” that’s associated with the other Passport already. I’d really like to keep two separate sets of accounts. Why? I use one set publicly (on business cards, for instance) and one set privately for family and friends. I also use multiple accounts as a cheap way to be logged onto Messenger at the same time on more than one machine. Anyway, now I’ve painted myself into a pickle.

Lora suggests that I use the browser to get to my Hotmail account and simply set Hotmail up as a Favorite. I’ll give that a try. In the discussion above I was using Pocket MSN.

I also set up a POP3 account and so far I can receive mail, but the outgoing mail doesn’t appear on the other side. I can see the phone go through a send/receive sequence, however, there isn’t much feedback in order to be able to tell what’s happening. I’m beginning to wonder if there isn’t an issue on the server side. Because of my ISP requirements, I have to send email through them and it’s been a long, long while since I even tried to go directly through that server. My guess is that that’s the problem.

What I’d really like to do at this point is be able to manage multiple POP3 accounts. It doesn’t appear that this is supported–maybe in a third-party app–however, using Lora’s suggestion I know I can navigate through a web client to get to all the email I need. It makes me wonder: Has the browser won the SmartPhone OS wars too?

Anyway, the downside here is that the web client doesn’t sync up with all my Outlook infrastructure. I’m guessing that there are ways to handle all of this. I’m just beginning to learn the ins and outs of the SmartPhone.
