I have an older Windows 2000 machine. I am attempting to upgrade to XP.

I do not have the password to log onto the machine and can not get it.

I have the XP disk and when I attept to boot from there it stalls at "Boot
from ATAPI CD-ROM :".

And and all suggestions on how to get past this would be appreciated.

Thank you,

An upgrade will not resolve your password problems. Best to deal with this
issue right now. Type the words

forgot Windows password

into a Google search box, then take your pick. About your CD-boot: If the
boot process stalls then you have a marginal or damaged CD or CD drive. You
need to test both by process of elimination: Try your CD on some other
machine, then try a different boot CD on your machine.

You don't need the password to upgrade. The old OS won't even be loaded
when you upgrade. Insert the WinXP upgrade CD and let it find your
existing prior install of Win2000. However, I would recommend to always
to do a fresh install of any version of Windows instead of dragging
along a polluted OS into your new OS. Just have the install CD for
Win2000 ready when the WinXP upgrade install wants to find a qualifying
install or CD for the prior version.

A wholly different problem than the first one. Ask one question per
thread to ensure that you get responses to both. Many respondents will
only address one issue, and other potential respondents might ignore
your thread because they see there are already some other respondents
participating and helping out.

So is your BIOS configured for its boot drive order to look for the CD
drive before it finds the hard disks?
