wanting to uninstall/delete device - XPproSP2

I recently went to control panel & then 'add hardware' to try and
delete a device driver for a scanner that isn't working. I'm HOPING
that once I delete this device driver, I can successfully re-install
the software for that device. It *appears* that going through
control panel and then 'add hardware' isn't the place to make this
happen. Can someone help? TIA...
