Virus corrupted Iexplorer??

I had a problem with a virus last week, but the virus checker appears
to have resolved it. The virus managed to do some damage - namely
knocking out the internet connection and various programs. I've
managed to resolve most of the issues and have broadband connection
again - my outlook works and so does my instant messenger. However,
iexplorer doesn't connect and nor does the anti-virus or anti-spyware.
I tried loading another web browser, but with no luck.

Any sugggestions as to what's happened and how I can get back
connectivity for iexploer and the virus checker?

Download this to a working machine, store on a thumb drive, insert in
the damaged machine, install, update and run:

OK, I'll try, but if my other programs can't update I don't see how
this one will.

You probably have much more work to do.

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

dealing with malware infections such as viruses, spyware (including unwanted
software), and adware.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!)
in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:

2b. Vista or Win7=> Run this scan instead:

3. Now run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting requested logs
in an appropriate forum, not here.

Will run these tonight. I managed to run avira antivirus, AVG, spybot
and malwarebyte(?) (all up to date) and they found some trojans
programs on a first run, but now all run clean. Looks like the damage
has been done, but hopefully there will be no further.
