Transfer wizard

If I use the transfer wizard, will most of my programs operate on the
receiving computor or will I need to reinstall with cds? Should I clear
everything off the receiving comp or will the dats be overwritten?

The Files and Settings Transfer Wizard migrates user files and settings
only, it doesn't migrate programs. You will have to reinstall your
programs.

And what were these "some programs"? The F.A.S.T wizard does *not*
migrate programs, it can be set to move files from the program's folder
but it will not migrate registry entries for the program so this would
only work for small programs that don't write to and use the registry,
or for programs where all of its registry entries are held in the HKCU
branch. Moving programs with this tool is a hit and miss thing at best
and at worse a recipe for trouble down the road. Users should not rely
on this tool to move their programs, the programs need to be installed
properly on the new computer.

Which newsreaders (certainly not Outlook Express)? Which chat programs
(certainly not Windows or Windows Live or Yahoo or AOL Messengers)?

I'm sorry but you did NOT transfer Outlook Express to the Vista computer nor
is Outlook Express even available in Vista. Apparently you successfully
used FAST to transfer your OE /data/ to /Windows Mail/ in Vista.

That being said, you might not have been so pleased if you'd been using more
than one OE identity in WinXP.

PS: Please avoid hijacking someone else's thread in future. Thanks.
