I have SP2.

I haven't installed a bunch of windows updates going back 2 years, nor have
I installed SP3 yet. (I know that July 13 is the deadline for SP3.) If I
install SP3, will it include those old updates I'm missing? If not, should I
install the old updates first and then SP3 or vice-versa?

If I should install all the old updates first, does chronological order
matter? If I install some newer updates first and later some older ones,
might I wipe out some corrections that the newer patches make?

SP3 first. (It already includes a lot of updates to SP2 up to the
release point of SP3).
Then, run Windows update (several times) until you have everything since
SP3.

WTF haven't you been keeping that computer fully-patched at all times? You
may have much more serious problems than your desktop icons!

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed IE7?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

Yes, I've been remiss, because so many patches seem to cause problems in
themselves. (Good thing you can't see my red face.) Computers are supposed
to be productivity tools, but I already spend so much time maintaining my
system, backing up, etc..... I didn't want to discover a patch was causing a
malfunction.

My computer came with McAfee and I have continued to renew that
subscription. It is current. I turned it off when I installed IE7. A lot of
people dislike it, but it's done well for me over many years.

I have Norton Ghost (was Symantec, I believe) pre-installed. That's just a
backup utility and not normally active.

You can scold me. I appreciate your help now and many times in the past and
value your advice.

....and Bobbie, when you finally upgrade to SP3 turn off McAfee because that
is one of the programs that cause problems with Windows Update.. You can
safely turn it off after you get to the MS Update site and do the same for
extra updates you'll need after installing SP3.

Although you can, it is not recommended.

It is far better to revert to IE6 (by uninstalling IE7). *Then* you may
update to SP3. Once you are at SP3, then you may update IE6 to either
IE7 or IE8.

Yes SP3 will include all updates up and including when SP3 was
released. I suggest do a clean install before installing SP3
because there might be some hidden malwares that you may not know
of and so it is better to be safe than sorry. After installing
SP3, there is no need to have any updates because they will only
slow down your system However, your Windows firewall should be
configured so that "No exceptions are allowed".

I am sure you know about MSE so I won't mention it here.
