In the last few weeks I have run into 3 computers running XP with SP3
suddenly hanging at the Windows logo screen (and a 4th I'm about to look
at). This is not all that unsual a service issue and I see it occsionally
with various causes (malware, windows file problems due to failing hard
drive, etc.) but these machines are unusual. They were malware free
(including dep rootkit checks), had no other problems, no items in event
logs, no recent new software or hardware installed, etc. They might work
normally after system restore, and then the problem recur in a day or two.
The only identifiable possibly related event in each case has been
