Also did you try a restore two or three points back...maybe,
just maybe you might get your old settings back, but it is a
long-shot.

That was indeed my long shot fall back position but the restore points
only went back two days. Unfortunately I had also backed up my drive
image of the XP partition not knowing when I did so that the thumb
drives weren't working properly. And since Murphy does reside in my
hip pocket I had deleted older backups since everything appeared
normal. Arggghhhh!

Next step...authorized service shop OR re-installation
(shudder), of the XP system and even then if it is a hardware
problem you will be back to square one.

My suggestion...try the authorized service route.
