Re-installing Internet Explorer

My Internet Explorer program has become corrupted; I need to acquire another,
and was hoping to install IE 8. I have Windows XP. I know I have to delete
the currently-installed IE, but after that, I'm lost. What do I need to do?
Please assume that this is the second time I sat down in front of a computer.

Explain.

Are you running WinXP SP2 or SP3?

Open IE Help | About: What version is displayed here (e.g., v7.0.1234.56)?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?
