ON 07: Huge File Size

D

I have a section in ON 07 with about 7 pages. Most have very little
on them. There are 2 or 3 screen clips and several items that were
pasted. When I check Windows Explorer it shows the section is 52MB
(MEGA, not kilo)!

This seemed impossible to me, so I saved it as a pdf file. As a pdf
file, it is 804KB (KILO)! This seems like the right size.

I have WinXP (sp3)-- if it matters.

What is happening here?

What size are the pasted files? And how large (would you estimate) the screen
clippings are?

Before I get to your question, this may help: today, the size of the
section is 84MB (up about 30MB since yesterday). I don't think I made
any changes since yesterday! (If anything was added, it was just a
sentence or two of plain text.)

Responding to your questions:
Pasted material: 2 items, with a total of about 14 vertical inches

Screen clips: 3 items, with a total of about 15 vertical inches

This seems to indicate that there is some file corruption.
It's my urgent advice not use the section anymore until receiving John
Guin's advice.
You may move the file with the section out of the notebook.

AFAICS not the size of paper, the *PIXELS* would be of interest.
And the *file* size of the original files.

I just checked the ON section with the problem: now it is up to
117MB -- and I haven't made any changes at all in the last 24 hours to
that section.

I am sure Rainald is right: there is a corrupted file. I believe
Word has a 'repair file' function, but I don't see a similar function in ON.

I use SugarSync to back up files remotely (and to keep them in sync
after being backed-up). I wonder if that could be involved in the
origination of the problem. I have never had this problem with any
other file in OneNote or any other Microsoft or other software in using
SugarSync so SugarSync may not be implicated at all.

Yes, Rainald clarified my question. what is the size of the files?

what type of files are they?

Last thing - if you click tools \ options \ save there is an Optimize
button. If you try it, how much does the file size change?

That did it!! File is now 497KiloB. (Down from 118Mega8)

Thank you very much for your help.

Great!
Thanks for the follow-up.

Yes, optimization cures the "bloat".
I had already written the suggestion yesterday but then deleted it
because thought that it would be better to clarify the details first.

There's i real "repair"-feature in ON. But there's the "Optimization"
which (a) cures the bloat of files and (b) re-writes the cache.

Most probably we caught the culprit!!
Are the notebooks used on more than just one computer?

OneNote is very special and in so far can not be compared with any
software. It has the feature of automatic synchronization (correctly:
replication). Therefore the notebook files must be stored in *ONE* place
only and opened *shared* in the computers involved. ON then works with
cache only and all changes are automatically synched.
This mechanism gets seriously spoilt if any other synching is used - be
it synching software, Groove, "Offline Files" etc.

Pls make sure to *exclude* the directory where the notebooks are stored
from you SugarSync touching the files.

I use the SugarSync *just* to do a backup. I would assume this
should not cause a problem, since it is the same, I think, is backing up
to an external hard drive. Do you concur?

BTW, when I first started using ON, I did use the SugarSync 'sync'
feature and found it created problems. So I now use ON on a single
computer -- and do not share the ON files with any other computer.

Yes. If you only use the software for backing up, this would be OK.
It's just the *synching* which causes troubles.
And certain way to corruption would be restoring data when notebooks are
open.

The built-in synching works really great. A fantastic feature if one
uses ON f.e. on a laptop and a desktop.
I case you'd need advice in so far, pls let us know.
