Login dialog box has disappeared in IE8

N

I've have been using IE8 under WinXP SP3 with no problems until just
recently. Now, when I go to the Fidelity.com site which contains all of my
investment stuff, I cannot log in because that dialog box has disappeared.
Everything else on the page is normal, all the other dialog boxes are there,
but the box under "LOG IN -- Customer ID" has vanished; there's the space
for it but it's just blank grey with no box. There's a "Log in" title on the
upper right of the page that can be clicked on, but that does nothing.

When I called Fidelity about this, the rep I spoke to could not help me with
this and finally suggested I install Firefox instead. I did that and it
fixes the problem all right, but Firefox gives me other problems and I would
prefer to go back to Internet Explorer.

I have tried reinstalling IE8 but this makes no difference. I have all the
MS updates.

On my other WinXP computer IE8 still works fine on the Fidelity site, but
this computer is the one on which I have my Excel workbooks relating to my
investment accounts, so I'd like to get it fixed on this one.

I'd be really grateful if someone could help me with this.

Have you tried turning on Compatibility mode?

Have you made sure Javascript is not disabled? (they might require it , and
use it to generate the links and popups)

Have you inadvertently added the site to the Restricted Sites zone? If so,
remove it from the list.

Also try enabling popups for the site - it possible that the log in at the
upper right pops up a new window, but if you have set IE to always ignore
popups from that site it will never tell you it blocked a popup.

And finally, what happens if you try to use the site in No Add-ons mode?
(Start>Run type iexplore -extoff ) If this fixes the issue, you have an
add-on being loaded that is interfering with that site.

Windows Compatibility mode? No, I don't think I've ever used that on this
computer.

I don't know how to check that.

Nope, nothing in Restricted Sites.

Nope, pops are not disabled.

Nope, that doesn't help either.

Yet tried loading IE8 in its no add-ons mode and retest?

Possibly you did not sign out of the Fidelity Site to begin with?
And/or clean your house, clear cookies and temp files, do you have Fidelity
as a saved Favorite, could be corupt, if you do delete the favorite, clean
your house, report back here.

Yes I did.

I've now also completely uninstalled IE8, reverting to IE7, and still had
exactly the same problem. I've reinstalled IE8, problem is still there.

I'm now thinking it may have to do with Norton 360, which I just installed
around the beginning of the month. That has an automatic login feature which
works fine with some sites but seems to screw up badly on others, and since
it makes some changes to login dialog boxes (turns the text area green when
it's putting the login information in) I'm wondering whether it also removed
that dialog box.

So I've gone into Norton and deleted the logins for Fidelity.com -- but the
problem is still there. My guess at this point is that Norton 360's login
feature PERMANENTLY screwed something up in IE (both 7 and 8, and even after
reinstallation), but I don't know what to do about it.

I always have to sign in fresh on the Fidelity site, and it automatically
does so in effect if I don't do it -- that is, it times me out after a while
and I have to sign in again.

I don't have Fidelity as a Favorite, I just go there every day; IE remembers
the address automatically.

Sorry, that's a garbled sentence. What I meant was, it automatically signs
me out in effect if I don't do it and I have to sign in again.

Personally I have never been happy with a Norton product, it may very well
be the problem, I use Fidelity myself and a have no problems signing on,
with that said I would check your Norton settings first, and if still no
joy, and this is up to you, disable Norton and see if you can log on. If you
can there is the answer.

Ad blockers can remove content. For example, some sites utilize the service
of Recaptha to present a graphic and an input box where you enter the
characters that you see in the image. The site isn't providing the code for
this. It comes from another site. If you use a hosts file, ad blocker, or
other software that removes the Recaptcha content from a web page then you
cannot complete the login because you can't see and enter the imaged
characters. So filtering of web content can render a web page corrupted or
unusable.

I haven't used any Norton product since 2003. Back then there was a blocker
feature in the NIS (Norton Internet Security) suite that could block some
content in a web page.

Have you yet purged ALL files and cookies from your TIF folder?

Good idea, thanks. I'll do exactly that.

Again, I have no problem with my other computer which also has Norton
installed. But I haven't used Norton's login feature much (if at all) with
that one.

I haven't been a big fan of Norton in the past either, frankly. I hadn't
used it for years but it used to be too intrusive for my liking. My ISP
(Comcast) gave me McAfee Security Suite free and I used that for years with
no problems. However, for some reason they dropped McAfee the end of last
month and gave subscribers Norton instead. It seemed fine and I actually
liked their login feature for some sites. But there are a number of things
on this computer that haven't seemed quite right lately -- dunno whether
Norton is the reason but it's a possibility.

No, I have not. Some of the cookies are useful, of course, and I don't see
how any cookies could be the problem (though admittedly I have no idea what
the problem is, so I suppose anything's possible).

I think I will first try disabling Norton (if I can do that) and see if that
helps.

Thanks very much.

Well, this is interesting. It just occurred to me to try a system restore,
since this problem only began within the last couple of weeks or
thereabouts. And now I find I CANNOT do a system restore. When I try to, it
just brings up a window with "System Restore" in the title bar and nothing
else -- the whole window is blank.

So I think this system is seriously hosed and it's time to do a full WinXP
reinstall. I've been meaning to put in a different motherboard anyway when I
got around to it, and this seems like a good time.

Thanks very much, everyone, for your help.

No, Internet Explorer 8 Compatibility mode. It's the little broken page icon
next to the address bar, it switches IE8 in to IE7 mode so that sites that
are written for IE7 but don't work quite right in IE8 can still work.

In which case I'd take a stab that use Compatabilty mode will help here as
the site may be assuming IE8 is the same as IE7 and is using incompatible
HTML/CSS.

I've just seen your other replies - I would agree with your that your system
could be hosed. Good luck on the reinstall - my Windows XP started playing
up a couple of months ago (blue screens on boot up, couldn't even get to
safe mode, even a registry replacement from a backup in recovery console
didn't work) so I ended up buying Windows 7 64-bit (I have 4GB of RAM, so
though I might as well make use of it all!) and I'm more than happy with it
now :)

1. Did you uninstall the McAfee freebie AND THEN download/run the McAfee
Consumer Products Removal Tool BEFORE you installed the Norton freebie?

2. Has any other (non-Comcast) Norton or McAfee application ever been
installed on the computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled
when you bought it)?

Thanks, Dan. (Sorry I'm so late in replying but I was tied up with other
things.)

Interesting to hear you like Windows 7 64-bit. I've been thinking of trying
that myself for my next build. I've got all the appropriate parts except for
the OS itself.

I don't remember that tool by name, but I did follow Comcast's/Norton's
instructions for uninstalling McAfee first. I followed exactly the same
procedures on two computers, both WinXP SP3 and both with McAfee which I
uninstalled and replaced with the offered Norton 360. The OTHER computer is
fine, no problems whatever.

Thanks for that link. I will save it in case I ever find myself in this
situation again.

However, their switch method seems to have worked fine on my other computer,
which is practically identical as to OS and other software related to this.
It's only this one computer that has all the problems, which may indeed be
the result of what you've called "a recipe for disaster," for all I know.

As mentioned earlier, this system now seems to be pretty badly hosed in
various ways. Since I've been meaning to put in a new motherboard anyway
(for unrelated reasons), I'll be doing a new install of WinXP and this time
there won't be the problem of switching from one security suite to another.

Thanks again,

Neil
