is there a way to put text (poem) on top of a photograph?

I want to put short poems on top of photos. Maybe use watermark or semi
opaque text over a photo? I have office suite 2003, so that's Word and
Publisher and Power Point. But I want to be able to both print and post
these art objects online.

Have you considered downloading and using the free Irfanview graphics
editor?

All of those programs will allow you to do that. I would recommend
Publisher. Not just because I'm a Publisher MVP but because I think it's the
easiest program to use for that purpose.

I agree with JoAnn here. To further help no matter what Office program you
decide to use as they all work very similar with text boxes and images,
import your picture/s and place them where you want hem and then create a
text box.

Right click the border of the text box and set the Fill Color on the Layout
tab to No Fill. Exit out and move the box over the picture (the picture
should show through the box (we will get rid of the border in a little
while.) Type your text in the box format the text and position the box so
it is exactly where you want it.

Once you get the box exactly where you want it right click on the border
again and go to the layout tab again and chose No Line from the Line Color
dropdown.

Easy enough to do in PowerPoint ...

Insert, Picture, From File and choose your photo.

Size it to fill the slide (helps if you first set the slide size to match
the proportions of your photo).

Add your text atop the photo.

Save as PPT for later use, then Save As and choose JPG, PNG or whatever
suites your purpose.
