Task Manager Tab - Process, I see that I am running anywhere between 35-39
applications. Seems to me there are duplicates. Is there a software that is
available to check to see if I need these? An example is: svchost.exe
Local Service

Thanks

a clean boot should eliminate a number of
processes that are currently running and
give you a better view of the issue.

to initiate a clean boot click on
start>run>msconfig

then go to startup tab and disable all
startups that are checked off to run at
boot time.

you may want to jot them
down for reference.

next go to the services tab, hide all
microsoft services and what remains
can also be unchecked.

then reboot and reexamine the
processes running.

if you find the number of processes
more reasonable to you,

then you have successfully eliminated
the superfluous processes with the
clean boot.

the question that you will then have
to figure is which non microsoft processes/
programs need to be launched automatically
via the msconfig

and which processes/programs can wait
until the desktop is launched and then
executed manually by you at your
convenience.

It is common for having multiple processes each of which is running
svchost.exe. That program is capable of performing numerous tasks.

In the example you cited, the account Local Service is using svchost.exe to
accomplish a task which does not need elevated privileges.

Process Explorer can display the command string for a particular invocation.
You may not find this string especially easy to understand.

If you read this article, you will be smarter than the average bear
about what goes on with svchost.exe and understand why it is normal to
have several.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial129.html

Once that is no longer a curiosity, if you would care to post a screen
shot of what you see in Task Manager, we can interpret any other
questions (or I will).

There is no guessing, probably, maybe or trial and error.

Notice in the following example below, the Virtual Memory column
display has been enabled in TM. This is very good information for
troublehooting and understanding performance issues. To enable that
column:

Right click the Taskbar, choose to open Task Manager.

Click View, Select Columns, check the box that says: Virtual Memory
Size. Expand the width of the Task Manager box so you can see all the
columns.

Double click a column heading in TM to sort.

Take a screenshot of what you see and upload the screenshot to one of
several free picture hosting WWW sites.

When you are done, we will be able to see what you are seeing.

To create and post a screenshot:

Press the Print Scrn button to copy your entire screen to the Windows
clipboard.

Press Alt Print Scrn to copy just the active window to the Windows
clipboard.

Open MS Paint:

Start, Program Accessories, Paint

When Paint opens, press CTRL-V to paste the clipboard, save the new
Paint file to your desktop or someplace you can remember. JPG files
take up less hard disk space than BMP files and are just as
readable.

Make as many screenshots as you need. Practice makes perfect. Be
careful your screenshot does not contain any personal information.
Practice viewing your images before you upload them to be sure they
are okay.

Create a free account on some free picture hosting web site. You can
always remove your account later if you want.

Here are some free image hosting sites:

http://www.imageshack.us/
http://photobucket.com/

Using your free account, upload your screenshot(s) (the JPG or BMP
files) to the site and it will return to you a URL web address (a
link) for your new image(s) that you can paste in a message post,
email, etc.

When you are done, what you post for others to use should look
something like this:

http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/2246/85575968.jpg

Post that URL web address back here with the links to your screenshots
in your response and we can click on the links and see your
screenshot. Post as many as you need - the site is free.
