Difference between Password Prottect vrs. Encrypt

What is the difference between using Save As > Tools > General Options versus
Prepare > Encrypt Document.

The old password-protect function in MS was weak, and in Office 2007, they
created a real encryption capability. What I don't know if whether or not the
password-protect function now uses the real encryption capability or not.
