Computer clock continually resets

I have a friend who is using Windows XP (SP2). Starting about a week ago,
when she boots up she gets an error message saying that her system's clock
is no longer valid, and that she should enter Setup (F2) to correct it.
This she does, but after shutting down the computer and re-booting at a
later time, she runs into the same error message (and a clock that is set to
August 1, 2004).

Is there a trick to setting the clock in XP (I am a Vista user) so that the
change is saved properly?

There's definitely a trick to changing the back-plane (a,k,a, "mobo")
battery, but that's too, too expensive to give away in Usenet for free.

Replace the battery.

It's very likely that the battery on the motherboard needs replacing.
They are very inexpensive and easy to replace.

In my fifteen years of playing with computers, I can't say that I have ever
had to replace a battery. Seems somewhat obvious -- in hindsight.

Are you sure piggy? All other people who have replied before you
already said that battery needs to be changed and you posted a message
with a view to contradict them but came out with the same or almost
similar solution (different words of course!). Do you actually need to
post a message whether or not it has been dealt with exhaustively?
