Can't disable Clear Type

O

Oliver

Flightless Bird
I am using Windows 7 and Office 2007.

I can't disable Clear Type. I have disabled it under control
panel/display. The option to disable it in the office-programs doesn't
appear.

FireFox, Word, Outlook display Clear Type ...

How can I disable Clear Type completely?

Thanks
Oli

Still no difference ... This Thunderbird-Window displays Clear Type too.

Cleartype is managed by the OS via the rendering engine. You can disable
through software settings or by editing the registry. If you have a computer
on a domain, group policy may override local settings. Are you saying that
setting the HKEY_CURRENT_USER/ Control Panel /Desktop / FontSmoothingType
dword value to 1 does nothing in Win 7, Office 2007, IE8 and others?

As he stated pretty clearly in his original post, he did that and it isn't
working....

I have it disabled on my machine. It probably depends a lot on the
monitor and resolution. I am running 1280x1024 on a 17" LCD monitor,
and I don't like the effect.

You'll probably like the effect less without cleartype. I disabled
it, and found that without it, many fonts were too thin, or were
too rough. I've learned to put up with the reddish halo around
some letters when cleartype is running, because the alternative is
worse.

If you are using internet explorer make sure it is turned off in that or it
will affect outlook etc. Tools/internet options/ advanced/ multimedia -
uncheck always use clear type etc.

Yes, the dword value above doesn't disable Clear Type. PC is not on a no
domain.

This option is disabled in IE. Nevertheless, IE, FireFox, Office and
some Windws 7 windows are displaying ClearType.

I guess it comes down to personal preference and a good thing that there
is an on/off switch. :)

If you are running Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise try
modifying the setting via gpedit.msc from the run command (Windows-R) or try
playing with the Cleartype Tuner Power Toy from MS. The latter will work
with any version. I have no idea why your registry changes are not taking
unless a GPO is preventing it.

What version of Windows 7 are you running, and do you as a user have admin
privileges on this box?

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit with admin privileges.

Installed Windows 7 and Office 2007 now on a trial basis again withaout
anything else, no updates, nothing. The option in the Office 2007
programs to disable Clear Type doesn't appear also. Hmmm ...

Hmm. I guess Microsoft forgot that one. It'll be fixed when SP1 comes
out... ;-)
