Introduction to Learning Lecture Notes

Generic Definition of Learning: a. A three stage process of making choices that result in meeting a standard of behavior that someone else established. b. Sequential trial-and-error random behavior until adopting, adapting, and maintaining a new behavior pattern that others call appropriate for the conditions. c. Transactions (exchanges) that result in one or more changed behavior patterns for managing a problem. d. Social code breaking and management. e. A survival mechanism; solving a problem in a way that benefits the learner. No way other than by observing a change in a behavior pattern exists to identify learning.

Operational Definition of Learning: a. Exchanges of time, effort, and other personal resources to adopt, adapt, and manage behavior patterns that resolve problems. b. Changes of observed behavior patterns of an individual that other people accept or that meet another standard. No way other than by observing a change in of behavior pattern exists to identify learning.

Heiny, Ph.D. is a retired professor, social scientist, and business partner with previous academic appointments as a public school classroom teacher, senior faculty, or senior research member, and administrator. Appointments included at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Peabody College and the Kennedy Center now of Vanderbilt University; and Brandeis University. Dr. Heiny also served as Director of the Montana Center on Disabilities. His peer reviewed contributions to education include publication in The Encyclopedia of Education (1971), and in professional journals and conferences. He served s an expert reviewer of proposals to USOE, and on a team that wrote plans for 12 state-wide and multistate special education and preschools programs.
