Mr. Mullenweg blogs today “We’re at a turning point: 2017 is going to be the year that we’re going to see features in WordPress which require hosts to have SSL available.”
Google uses SSL as a ranking factor and Chrome will soon flag sites that are unencrypted. Therefore it’s time to move your site to SSL.
Mr. Mullenweg also weighs in on PHP 7: “We will consider whether hosts use PHP7 by default for new accounts next year as well.”
This site moved to PHP 7 and wished we’d made the move sooner. It’ll be nice when more hosting services require PHP 7 – allowing developers to take advantage of the new PHP 7 features.
