From our family to yours, we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. We are grateful and sometimes embarrassed by our bounty. Yesterday, we had three Tablet PCs operating most of the day in the kitchen.
Thanksgiving day reminds me of stories my mother told of her childhood. She knew the joy of receiving charity. She was deeply thankful for whatever she had. In her last five years, she was legally blind, but enjoyed seeing pictures of family on one of Loren’s, Layne’s or Lora’s Tablet PCs. Yes, the pictures were big enough and bright enough for her to enjoy with her limited vision.
As a child, each member of Mom’s family had one bowl of hot corn mush each a day to eat. When they were lucky, Grandma fixed corn bread and Grandpa brought home a five gallon bucket of thrown away fruit from the slop bin at an Emeryville, CA cannery.
The day before Thanksgiving each year, Mom and her younger brother helped their mother assemble gift boxes with food donated by friends at out church in Oakland. She said there were no words to express how happy she was when someone delivered a box of food to their house. Grandma made that small box of food last for at least two weeks. Until she died, Mom thought that one of her failures in life was not impressing enough on her children the value of charity to people without food, clothing, and shelter.
In the spirit of Mom’s childhood, we ask you to join us in sharing your bounty with a child.
