Little Change: The Number of Long-term Unemployed

According to the latest unemployment figures released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of long-term unemployed showed little change in July. The number sits at 4.2 million people.

Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 162,000 in July, and the unemployment rate edged
down to 7.4 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Employment rose in
retail trade, food services and drinking places, financial activities, and wholesale trade.

Other figures which remained unchanged included:

  • civilian labor force participation rate
  • number of persons employed part time
  • persons were marginally attached to the labor force

Sadly, the number of discouraged workers increased.
