How do I get the side bar with the gadgets to stay OFF the desk top. I
click the desktop and click View and un-click Desktop gadgets but it
always comes back.

a minimum of three gadgets in the side bar. I want to hide the side bar

I don't get any message like that.
Try deleting the Sidebar entry from here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Just before doing anything to the registry, check up that you are using
windows 7, because my version (pro) does not have a sidebar - just gadgets
you can choose one at a time. I had assumed that was so for Win7
generally - am I wrong?

In Windows 7, I don't have a side bar, I just have a few gadgets.

In Windows Vista, I had a side bar (I kept pretty much the same gadgets
when I upgraded to Win 7).

Are you running Win 7 or Vista?

I think the OP may have upgraded from Vista to Win 7, but somehow kept
the sidebar...

I think the suggestion from Dave-UK may be the way to go:
"Try deleting the Sidebar entry from here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"

Or uninstall the sidebar, if it shows as installed, and then just run
Gadgets...

To be exact, I mean run Desktop Gadgets, and select the preferred
gadgets from that screen to install. There's also a button "Get more
gadgets online" at the bottom right.

Windows 7 does not have a sidebar. If you have Windows 7, and a sidebar is
installed, then it is a third party application. On the other hand, you may
be using Windows Vista, which does have the sidebar.

You'll see the last FAQ:
"How can I stop sidebar from opening automatically when I start my
computer?"
1) Open Windows Sidebar properties by clicking the Start button , clicking
Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking
Windows Sidebar Properties.
2) Clear the Start Sidebar when Windows starts check box, and then click OK.

Under Task Manager there is a process running called sidebar.exe,
located in C:/Program Files\Windows Sidebar\sidebar.exe
This process is named 'Windows Desktop Gadgets'

I'd have to manually delete it from the Registry Run key, or perhaps
simply remove the /autorun switch at the end of the run line.
But none of my gadgets would be running.
It starts again when I right-click the desktop and choose 'Gadgets',
and all of my gadgets show up again.

The actual visible sidebar just doesn't show, but it's actually
running invisibily in the background over the whole screen, so the
gadgets can be anywhere.

I felt like this needed clarification.

The system in question is a new Dell running Windows 7 64 bit.
P{perhaps my terminology calling it a side bar is not correct but it is
a window that contains about six gadget icons. I can delete all but two
of the gadgets before I get a message that there must be a minimum of 3
gadgets in the window. I don't ever use the gadgets and I just want the
window containing them to go away.

That's not a standard Windows 7 thing. There is no visible "window"
that holds the Gadgets as there was in Vista - in Win7 the Gadgets
float freely and can be moved anywhere on the desktop. You can add
as many as you want - you're not restricted to six. Maybe you're
seeing a Dell add-on?

I can just close each or all Gadgets and they stay gone until I re-
activate them.

What you are describing does not sound like Win7's sidebar nor gadgets.
It may look like them, but I'd suspect it may be one of Dell's little
goodies added to make their machine more 'user friendly'.

Have you looked to see what DEll programs and features are automatically
started when you boot up?
