If you really, really want OE, upgrade your Win 7 to pro, then install XP in
the Virtual Machine. OE will be there in all its glory. You can keep the
Virtual Machine open all the time you're working on the computer and just
switch to it as needed.

This message posted from XP Mode using Outlook Express. :) Note, my Win 7
newsreader is Thunderbird.

firefox usually is along for the ride and epiphany is a firefox variant
that also comes along for the ride in certain distros. you just click on
'web-browser' or something. (or you can use konqueror if you want.) I
pretty much use them all depending on what's easiest to click on or mood.

I like xmms but it's now audacious. works well. not into the other stuff
but I'm not into collecting a lot of music and cataloguing it.

no need.

oh, they're like 'shortcuts'. people use similar in Windows all the time.

how I feel often enough in Windows. I still can't quite get straight what
the 'administrator' account is and I would need a good handbook to figure
out all the %blahblah% type commands, and 'join points' (I forget the
name) are tricky though I get the point.

yes, I understand; alludes to basic rule of human cognition: what one is
familiar with makes sense.

anyway, way off topic. forgive my caving to temptation.

Try the nearest warez site for microsoft office 2007 or 2010. Outlook express
is a part of both.

Are you sure about that? I know Outlook is included, but I'm quite
surprised to hear that OE is also included in Office.

Eh? No it's not. Office contains OUTLOOK, not Outlook EXPRESS. The two are
entirely separate and DIFFERENT programs.

Personally, I see no reason why Microsoft has to, or even should,
offer any e-mail programs at all. There are *many* third-party choices
available.

Yes, if it's done, it's done by the OEM. Some OEMs, but not all, do
that.

Sorry, that is *not* correct. You are mixing up Outlook (which is a
part of Microsoft Office) with Outlook Express. They are two very
different programs.

Gordon, sorry I didn't include that step (for either operation). When I
originally wrote the post, I thought about including that, but decided that
the OP probably knew how to copy files from one computer to another.

As I progressively transfer (general Home system) from XP to Win 7
I can't decide on this issue.
There doesn't seem to be a clear alternative.
Suggestions to go to Windows Live Mail perhaps dominate.

I have a basic single user Email & Newsgroup reader need.
& for me the bizness of transferring the existing stuff is a main issue.

I'm puzzled that no clever cracking User has modified the OE files
from XP so it will run in Vista / Win7 ?
