On startup I get an error that says something like "Application could not
start because MSVCR71.dll could not be found. Reinstalling the application
might fix the problem." And I think it's reader_sl.exe that won't start.

What is reader_sl.exe? Where does it reside? What makes you suspect that it
is the culprit? Malware?

Adobe reader Speed Launcher, remove the Shortcut to it that resides in
Programs, Startup, and that should take care of the issue.

Yes and if you Remove it, then it won't be called.

Sorry, I misunderstood. I removed the shortcut and, for now, everythings OK.
Thanks,
Jeff

You're welcome, if you decide you want it running again( but I can't
imagine why), just uninstall Adobe Reader, and reinstall it.

That's the Adobe Reader "Speed Launcher." Either re-install your Adobe
Reader, or remove the registry entry from
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Personally, I'd
remove the registry entry; the "Speed Launcher" provides no noticable
improvement in opening PDFs.
