Printer Install

J

Jerry

Flightless Bird
I am running Win XP SP3 and am trying to install a new printer, During the
software install I get a message saying that I need to start the Print
Spooler. When I try to start it I get the error message as follows;

Could not start the print spooler service on local computer.
Error 1068: the dependency service or group failed to start.

Any further info needed from me?
Any ideas?

You need to mention exactly what kind of printer

that message does not sound at all normal

Try this:

Go to start>run>services.msc>OK>print spooler. Double click on it, then
click on dependencies. Make sure Remote Procedure Call (RPC) is indicated.
Go to RPC on services.msc and ensure that it is set to Automatic and is
started.

RPC is started but Print Spooler is stopped and will not start, just give
the error message that I indicated.

Printer is an HP DeskJet D1600 if that makes any difference.

The print spooler is one of WinXP's "Services" and can be
set On/Off/Automatic: reached via Computer Management
or something like that.

E.g. Dell (Lenovo) printers are notorious for needing tricks
or tweaks to instal.

I had the printer running and had to do a system restore and ever since it
will not load the software.

Some printers should not be connected until told to do so. I suggest you
disconnect the printer,
delete the printer driver, reboot then install the driver. Do not connect
the printer till told to do so.

I have an HP4200 and had the same problem but it was caused by my playing
around with the settings. In the properties>ports I had to uncheck "Enable
printer pooling" and in advanced unclick "Spool print documents" and click
"print directly to the printer". If that doesn't do it then try
advanced>printing defaults. We have different printer models but yours
should be similar enough to mine to have these same things.

Like I said, the printer software won't load, because the print spooler
won't start, so there are no printers listed nor properties to click on.

If I click on add a new printer I get the error message:

"Operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not
running."

And when I try to get it started it gives a similar message.

I found the answer to my problem, I googled the question print spooler won't
start and they told me to run:

sc config spooler depend= RPCSS

Then the spooler was able to start and I loaded the software and it now
works fine.

Good information. I'll keep this in my "tech notes" folder in case it
happens to me again. "sc" in dos prompt shows a lot of information in how to
use it.
