It is certainly true that I saw that message. Those may not be the exact
words but that is what I remember of it.

Microsoft Security Essentials validated before installing as you say.
It may be coincidental that I received the message while updating the
signatures db.

I note that under the Basic Membership of Microsoft SpyNet, MSE will send
info to Microsoft about software that the system detects. I wonder if it
could be connected with this?
