IE8 doesn't respond to clicks on links in Yahoo emails

C

On my new Acer Aspire One 532 netbook I have Win7 and IE8. Whilst IE8
usuallly loads and browses web pages OK, for some reason it refuses to
respond to clicks on links embedded in Yahoo emails. I read elsewhere
that this is due to the installation of IE8 not registering various
dlls. Apparently some MVPs have written a script to do this. On my
Qosmio laptop I have XP sp3 and have no problem with IE8 at all.
Please can someone advise. Thank you. CJB.

Is it a Win7 64-bit computer?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

> Apparently some MVPs have written a script to do this.

Download/run the appropriate, newly-updated script(s) by IE MVP Kai
Schaetzl:
http://iefaq.info/index.php?action=artikel&cat=42&id=133&artlang=en

Tip: The file named ie8-rereg.all.zip contains all three (3) scripts below.

If you have a Win7 32-bit computer:

. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the
taskbar) then Run the script named ie8-rereg.cmd & reboot.

If you have a Win7 64-bit computer:

. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the
taskbar) then Run the script named ie8-rereg.32on64.cmd to correct the
problem in IE8 32-bit & reboot.

. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the
taskbar) then Run the script named ie8-rereg.64on64.cmd to correct the
problem in IE8 64-bit & reboot.

Thank you for your response.

There appears to be two issues:

1/ Norton or McAfee virus s/w - McAfee was pre-installed - I have
activated it for the trial of 60-days, but will remove it a.s.a.p. I
cannot seem to transfer my paid-for licence for Norton on my Qosmio to
include the Acer, so will go for a free shareware version later.

2/ IE8 installation not registering various dlls. This also came pre-
installed. I am somewhat amazed that MS should have gotten something
so wrong which is surely fundamental, knowing that there are billions
of users around the world.

I have looked at the scripts at:

http://iefaq.info/index.php?sid=1374950&lang=en&action=artikel&cat=42&id=133&artlang=en

There seems to be 32-bit and 64-bit versions. I am not sure which ones
to run, how can I tell what Win 7 (Starter) I have - 32 or 64? Ditto
IE8?

Many thanks - CJB.

You must reboot when instructed to do so!]

1a. Download the Norton Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop:

2. Close all open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar).

3. Uninstall the McAfee free-trial (and the Norton application, if it's also
installed) & reboot.

4. Make certain that the Windows Firewall is now enabled!

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,

WOW - OK - many thanks - I'll give this a go at the weekend. It does
appear to be involved just to make IE8 activate some links on web
pages. Can't MS issue patch or something, or maybe I should go back to
IE7. Maybe that would be easier? Chris B.

Your problems have nothing whatsoever to do with IE8 or Microsoft and
everything to do with having (had) a McAfee and/or Norton application
installed at some point in the past. McAfee and Norton applications are
notorious for not uninstalling (or upgrading) cleanly.

The "patch" you need is getting rid of all the McAfee and Norton "leftovers"
and then correcting the issues they've caused (hopefully) with your IE8
settings.

PS: You cannot "go back to IE7" in Win7.

You can make condescending statements, but you can't bother to mention that
Symantec/Norton has a removal tool you can download and run? Not sure but I
think McAfee has one too; I don't use them - I took McAfee off with Add or
Remove and never saw another lick of a problem with it so never had need of
a tool.

I am the only user if the Acer netbook - and Win 7 only allows me to
log in - so I assume that I have Admin. acess too.

So I closed everything down except Windows Explorer. Found ie8-rereg,
did right mouse click, clicked on Run As Administrator. Got the
following:

================

IEREREG Version 1.07 for IE8 27.03.2009

installs and registers (if suitable) all DLLs known to be used by IE8.
should only take a few seconds, but please be patient

registering IE files
registering system files
correcting bugs in the registry
ERROR: Access is denied. <=========== BUT does this mean that

Your assumption is incorrect: While your User Account may have
Administrative privileges, you are not running as /the/ Administrator.

I suspect that the above has nothing to do with Administrative privileges
and that you haven't taken care of everything in my second reply to your

What an immense help would it be when you obtained a good newsreader!

Now you need to direct all posters to go along your way of doing things,
while with a proper newsreader you could simply page back through the
thread and read again what you wrote before.

It depends on when you got it. In order to monitor what the cmd file is
doing you could comment out the echo off and delete the /s switches on
the regsvr32.exe commands. If there is still a reg.exe command trying
to fix up a problem for shdocvw.dll and that is what you are getting the
permission problem on you can ignore that for your OS IMO.

One additional command which should be in the script IMO is:

regsvr32.exe /n /i ieframe.dll

Right I've done all the above and cleaned out McAfee entirely. And
I've installed MS Security Essentials.

The removal of McAfee also seems to have 'cured' various issues like
Media Player 12 crashing with a Server Execution error (apparently
caused by IE8's dlls being incorrectly registered), and the issue with
the BIOS clock settings continually losing time (or reverting back to
the default date/time).

Also I've deleted all the games pre-installed from Oberon and a load
of other junk.

And the netbook now flies.

Many thanks to everyone - Chris B.
