Forget the Google suggestion above (for once). Just see this KB article; it
provides exactly the answer to your question:

(Note that there are different sections for XP, Vista, etc.)
I tried Google 1st, but after its links didn't seem to help, I (finally)
found the article by just using the "bing" search box (limited to the
"Microsoft Support" option) at
http://support.microsoft.com
Typing "32-bit" in the "bing" search box results in a drop-down list of
possibilities, including "32-bit or 64-bit." Select that option, and the 2nd
item in the search results list is "How to determine whether a computer is
running a 32-bit version or 64-bit version of the Windows operating system,"
which links directly to the KB article above.
Why doesn't the XP "Help" feature just provide this information (or the
appropriate link) and simplify the whole thing for users? That would've been
too easy and customer-friendly, I guess.
BTW, I don't know about other operating systems, but in XP (SP 3) you don't
have to run the process the article tells you. The 1st process listed opens
the "Systems Properties" window, which you can also access via
Control Panel | Performance & Maintenance | See basic information about your
computer (the 1st option under "Tasks")
(This is a much easier procedure to remember the next time you need this box
for any reason. The command sequence applies to the default Win XP control
panel display -- I didn't check the traditional display.)
FYI, of the 3 "most relevant" results Google gave mewhen I tried it, the 1st
was to this discussion string! The 2nd link was to a long list of
egghead.com articles, the vast majority of which of course assume you already
know which type of machine you have. Searching "egghead" for "32-bit"
provided a link to a MS KB article that applied only to Vista. That's when I
finally just resorted to "bing." I could've saved myself a lot of time and
frustration just by starting there.
