IE7 and OE "freezes" when both open

I don't know how to describe this, but in short, I have to bring up my Task
Manager, and once I dc IE all of OE shuts down, too - including the email
being composed.

If I 'Send a Link' from IE via OE, and then go 'look' at something else
(read an email, for example) all of a sudden I cannot close IE, and I cannot
save the email I have been composing which is usually an important one, of
course.

Any help, please!

Using IE7, and 'on' is MS Security Essentials, Secunia, and Windows Washer,
with 38% capacity remaining. Everything's updated weekly.

Have you considered using System Restore to roll back to before this problem
surfaced? (assuming it wasn't too long ago, and if you know the approx
date, you could go back a bit further just to play it safe. Of course,
anything installed since then would need to be reinstalled).

It has been going on about 3 months, though. I don't install programs
frequently, if that is what would 'need be be reinstalled.'

I can do that, sure, but what on earth is this?

Uninstall (Webroot) Window Washer, reboot & test.

I can guarantee you that Microsoft Security Essentials & Window Washer do
NOT play nicely together and that may be related to your IE7 & OE issues.

Hopefully it works!!
(Besides which, if you had to go back 3 months with System Restore as you
seemed to imply, I don't think it would be worth it - assuming that was even
doable or practical (a week or two, probably ok, but not a month or more)

You're welcome & thanks for your feedback. Test for a day or so; should the
behavior persist:

When (approx. date) did you install Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) and
was the computer fully-patched at Windows Update at the time?

What anti-virus application was installed before you installed MSE, was your
subscription still current, and did you uninstall it before you installed
MSE?

Has a(nother) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer?

Did a Norton or McAfee free-trial come preinstalled on the computer when you
bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)

AVG or the "other one," and yes, I did uninstall it first. In fact, I ?
that AV because it kept warning me it was expiring.

NO.

I do not think so - it came from state blind services to me. If it was on
there, I had it uninstalled by the tech trainer at the time - 3 yrs ago.

Take some of this back, PA Bear - it only "does it" when I have more than 1
OE window open; then they're all frozen, until I shut OE down.

Are you in the habit of leaving OE open 24/7, even while the computer's in
Standby or Hibernate mode overnight?

How many messages are located in your Inbox folder right now?

How many messages are located in Sent Items folder right now?

How many messages are located in Deleted Items folder right now?

How frequently do you compact all OE folders? [Don't do it right now, just
answer my question.]

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity...

File | Identities | Add new identity

Assuming all is well, (1) compact all folders in the old identity, (2)
import messages from the old identity into the new one, and then (3) delete
the old one (File | Identities | Manage Identities).

If still no joy...

<canned>
You may be seeing the effects of a hijackware infection!

NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had
expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has
since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows
Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall
Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help!

Microsoft PCSafety provides home users (only) with no-charge support in
dealing with malware infections such as viruses, spyware (including unwanted
software), and adware.
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?&prid=7552&st=1

Also available via the Consumer Security Support home page:
https://consumersecuritysupport.microsoft.com/

Otherwise...

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the
MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected
machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it.

2a. WinXP => Run the Windows Live Safety Center's 'Protection' scan (only!)
in Safe Mode with Networking, if need be:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

2b. Vista or Win7 (but not Vista 64-bit or Win7 64-bit) => Run this scan
instead: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm

3. Now post the requested information (logs, etc.) in your own, new thread
in one (only) of the following recommended forums for assistance by an
expert in such matters. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!!

• SpywareHammer: Malware Removal
http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php?board=10.0

• Spyware Warrior: Help with spyware removal

If these procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
