IE question

I have IE 8 installed but this problem happened also when I had IE7. Why
when I go to some websites it tells me I have IE6 installed and page would
look better with IE7 or 8. Thanks

Are you ABSOLUTELY sure you have IE8 installed?

In IE go to the "Help" menu (press ALT if it is not showing) and
select "About Internet Explorer"

Hi Debbie,

go to http://www.enhanceie.com/ua.aspx

there is a test of your IE Browser's UserAgent string.

You should see something like

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 6.0; Trident/4.0; GTB6.3; )

The section MSIE 7.0 says that I am using a Internet Explorer browser,
probably version 7.

In fact I am using IE8 with Tools>Compatibility View Settings- show all
sites in Compatibility View enabled.

So fist up check that you have not selected "Show all sites in Compatibility
View" on the Compatibility View Settings dialog.
It is a good idea also to select the "Include updated web site information
from Microsoft" option.

I expect that you may already have the above settings and that what you may
be seeing in your UserAgent string (on that test page) is something like

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT
..0; )Windows NT 6.0; Trident/4.0; GTB6.3; )

viz: with a nested () block inside the normal UserAgent string.

On that page http://www.enhanceie.com/ua.aspx you will find some registry
scripts to fix IE for you.

There are many programs which can change your IE UserAgent string....

Since you had the issue when you had IE7 installed as your main browser, I
am guessing that you may have IE7 Pro installed. It has options to change
the UserAgent string.

If you had it installed when you upgraded to IE8 it would have keep the
incorrect UserAgent string from IE7.

Copy and paste back your UserAgent string from the test page
http://www.enhanceie.com/ua.aspx
and we may be able to point you in the direction of a longer lasting fix for
unless you can find the program that is making the change, it will come back
to haunt you.

Regards.

I didn't say you were - but there are a lot of posters who post here
who are and we have no way of knowing, from your original post, if you
are one or not.

And BTW you do not say if you know you have IE8 from checking its
version as I suggested!

Well, the prompt is not being caused by your (Vista) User Agent (UA) string
so we can rule that out.

Can you cite a few links to the websites where you see this prompt, please?

Has Vista SP1 or SP2 been installed yet?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed IE8?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

I'm using win XP yet. I think I found the problem, I have that IEpro7 and
had it set to ie6 instead of default. It's fixed now.
