Dell Dimension XP Professional PC - Default search engine set to Google -
Upgraded to IE 8 and when open IE get msg indicating default search program
is corrupt and default search program will be changed to Bing. But, this does
not happen or does not work. Every time I open IE 8, I get same msg. There is
no error msg or program IDed. When I go to Manage Search Engines, I can't
remove Google and can't make any other search engine, including Bing, the
default.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3) as well as your IE
version when posting in an IE-specific forum or newsgroup. Please do so in
your next reply.

Tip: Never, EVER use System Restore to "undo" an update, Service Pack, or IE
upgrade! Intead, uninstall the update, Service Pack, or IE upgrade &
reboot. If that doesn't correct the problem, then try System Restore.

1. Does the behavior persist if you start IE in No Add-ons mode? To start
IE in No Add-ons mode:

=> Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without
Add-ons; or

=> Start | (All) Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No add-ons).

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode [Applies to IE7 &
IE8 in all OSS]

2. Does the behavior persist if you Reset IE Advanced settings (RIES)?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737

3. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed IE8?

4. Has a(nother) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this
machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?

5. Any chance you (recently) did a Repair Install of WinXP?

Hi Ken,

go to ieaddons.com and add some other search providers,

Then go to the IE Addons Manager and delete the existing Bing Search
Provider.

Then go to ieaddons.com again and install the bing search provider again (if
you want to)

However if you reset IE's settings (Advanced tab of Internet Options). You
will have to repeat the process above to remove your old version of the bing
search provider.

Which country are you in Ken? Australia/New Zealand?

Robear<wink/>

Regards.

I finally resolved by doing the following:

1. Click Start. 2. Click Run. 3. Type in regedit and press enter. 4. In the
registry editor, expand and navigate to the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders. 5. Right click User Shell Folders. 6. Select New and then
Expandable String value. 7. A new value is added in right pane. 8. Type in
AppData and press enter. 9. Double click AppData. 10. Under value data type
in:

%USERPROFILE%\Application Data

Thanks for all your help.

OK, now why did you have to resort to such machinations?
