help with Windows Logon process terminated

A friend of mine has a laptop that has suddenly started the old "Stop:
c000021a {Fatal System Error}. The Windows Logon Process system terminated
unexpectedly with a status of f 0xc0000135 (0x00000000 0x00000000). The
system has shut down.

Using BartPE I've managed to run Dr Watson as per here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/156669

The problem is that even having done that it will NOT boot at all past this
error so I can't look at the Dr Watson log!
It does the same in Safe Mode and Last known good configuration.

I'm now currently searching (using a Linux Live CD) for "winlogon" to see if
that's corrupted, but it's not finding anything.

The situation is complicated by the fact that the Windows XP Home CD from
which this has been installed has gone missing in a move, and I only have XP
Pro CDs.

Is there anyway I can repair an XP Home installation using an XP Pro CD?

More info - I have found FOUR copies of winlogon.exe within C:/Windows. One
in system32, one in servicepackfiles\i386, one in $Ntservicepackuninstall$
and one in Softwaredistribution\download\cf(lots of numbers)

Where should the Winlogon.exe file that is used to logon be?

The Winlogon.exe file used to logon is in the \WINDOWS\system32 folder,
if the file is corrupt copy the one in the \WINDOWS\system32\dllcache,
or if there are no copies in the dllcache copy it from the
servicepackfiles\i386 folder over to the System32 folder.

Thanks - I've actually bitten the bullet and installed a spare Win XP Pro
version I have which is redundant....
(Now I need something that opens Works files........'cos that disk is
missing as well!!!!!)

Thanks for that - unfortunately all these require Office which we don't have
on this computer.
However, I found a version of Open Office that WILL open wps files
natively.....
