Has anyone had this trouble in Windows 7. Periodically Explorer shuts
down, and a notice window pops up to say it is because of a problem. It
then starts up again automatically after closing down my open files. In
typically Microsoft systems way though it doesn't tell me why! Anyone
any ideas please?

Have a look at your reliability history:
Action Center > Maintenance > View Reliability history.
Click on a day to see what's been happening.
There may be a clue in there somewhere.
