Engadget points to several next-generation UMPC reference designs shown by Intel at this week’s Intel Developer Forum (IDF).

If you want a better idea of what Intel is planning for the future, I’d recommend viewing this IDF keynote by Mobile David Perlmutter (Senior Vice President, Mobility Group at Intel). The majority of the UMPC discussion begins around the 43 minute mark in the presentation.

The key point: New UMPCs will be built around a next generation of processors that by 2008 will decrease power consumption by a factor of 10 (compared to Intel’s 2006 processors).
