The official name for these new ultra-mobile PCs is…well…..Ultra-Mobile PC or UMPC for short. This hasn’t stopped many people from calling these devices “Origami” PCs. The Origami name came from the pre-launch code name used when the product was under development and it’s also part of the name of Microsoft’s official UMPC site, www.OrigamiProject.com.
But just when you thought that two names were enough, it looks like a third name is floating around: “minitablets”. Over the last couple weeks CNet is beginning to sprinkle it’s articles with the term minitablet when describing UMPCs.
I like it. It’s a lot less techy sounding than “UMPC” and more descriptive than “Origami.”
Before you rush out and buy up domain names with permutations of “minitablet” in them, however, let’s all consider that a name is just a name and UMPC-slash-Origami is just fine as they are. That being said, I wonder if there are any other potential names lurking around? What about “LifeStyle PC”? Or “Utra-Tablets”? Or….
