How much will Apple sales outshine Tablets in higher-ed?

I realize this is old news, but as a person that sees tremendous value in Tablet PCs in education, I can’t help but recognize the number of Apple sales projected for higher-ed students: “A recent higher-education survey cited by analyst Katy Huberty reveals that roughly 40 percent of college students say their next computer purchase will be a Mac, well ahead of Apple’s current 15 percent market share in the demographic.”

This means that there’s potentially room for 60% of the students to purchase Tablet PCs, but I’m not holding my breath. The trend is going the wrong direction.

The one bright spot may be with lecturers. My guesstimate is that they are more interested in the value of Tablet PCs. Tablet numbers aren’t going to be too good though if only instructors are the owners of Tablets.

I realize that many see this as a marketing failure on Microsoft’s and the OEMs side. In part I see this too, however, to me the solution isn’t more marketing. It’s continued innovation. I meam innovation in terms of features, product experience, and price. I think this is going to happen. Maybe a bit slower than I’d like, but it’s going to happen.
